Hi! Has anyone seen this happen to their dogs?? It's the second time its happend in the last couple of weeks. I'll be calling the vet tomorrow. I've noticed his nails flaking before, but never this. Its Its clearly uncomfortable for him. Background: he is a neutered 4yo lab/rottweiler cross. He has a sensitive stomach, and we feed him on Hills science plan, sensitive. He is other wise, fit active, happy and healthy

The photo isn't very clear for me but I think I'd be adding some good oil to his food, like salmon oil or even coconut oil. You could also massage some into his paws, probably before walking do he isn't tempted to lick it off.

There is an autoimmine condition called systemic lupus erythematosus that can cause nails to split. Hopefully your vet will recognise this if the symptoms match.

Thanks for your replies! I should have said, they get salmon oil on their dinner every night, my older boy has poor joints, so we thought they'd both benefit.
I was fearful it might be autoimmune based, as there's been no mechanism of injury. Hopefully the vet will say it's something nice and simple to treat!

I hope he's OK and the vet can reassure you - do let us know how you get on please.
