can I ask how much does a raw food diet cost nowadays? Let’s say for a English cocker spaniel? I’m looking after a friends dog tomorrow and I know it’s raw food he’s on, frozen in packets., any info please.

I buy various types of mince....400g packet around £1.20. I should imagine cocker would need one of these ...or almost, per day?

Are you still in Fife? Our butcher does (I think) 500g for £1. It has no bone so I calculate slightly more than one chicken wing per 500g adds enough bone.

Yep still in fife , my dogs did live a good age but I do wish years ago I was brave enough to go down the raw route, whatever they caught they got there fair share,

Could you estimate how heavy he is, Lurcherman?

As a guideline: Our Cockers have 1/2 lb each per day, for maintenance diet, but obviously more when the working season starts. We have one girl that is quiet tiny and tubby, so she gets a small 1/2lb and one of the others who is a bit bigger and leaner gets her extra bit.

I have googled raw animal meat suppliers in Fife.
You appear to have lots of suppliers, some with good prices at no more than £1 per lb.

Judy not sure on his weight, I’ve looked after him before and he gets 175 grams twice a day, he’s not a worker, he seems solid, fit, and happy with what he gets,

Easiest is for owner to provide you with some frozen packs of what dog normally eats in meal-sized portions.

The general recommendation is between 2 and 3% of bodyweight per day. It'll be higher quantity of dry food, as the raw will contain water. So based on an average weight for a cocker of 12kg, that would equate to around 300g per day. My supplier's minces range from 79p/500g to around £3/500g. Call it an average of £1.69 to give a good variety and you're looking at £1 a day (I think - coffee hasn't kicked in yet). But they're not the cheapest, so it coul be well under.

As Hemlock says, though, you should carry on feeding what the dog's owner feeds.

Of course I’m not going to change the dogs diet while he is here, that would be wrong, so just 350grams seems about right,

I use Paleo Ridge and they have two very helpful canine nutritionists there, Sharon and I think Ester. Give them a call and ask to speak to one of them.

I'm new here so cannot post or copy links. Somewhere else on this forum I followed a link to an independant website that compares dog foods and gives a price calculator. It is called 'all about dog food': thank you to whoever lead me there, it is a great resource. We are starting our pup on Natural Instinct.
