Does anyone know of a small dry dog food for poodles

Hi

I have a 2 year old mini poodle and a 3 month old mini poodle too. The 2 year old is a very fussy eater as wont eat food straight away. Tried dried food , wet food and raw food but still very stubborn.

It seems that she has to eat regularly as after so many hours she gets a squeaky tummy and then goes and eats grass and looks uncomfortable in pain. We have tried putting the food down for a few minutes and if not touched take it back up and put down later to no avail.

Now we have the puppy food of which is a lot smaller and the older dog seems to like it and eats it ok. The food the puppy has is lillys kitchen puppy.

1) does anyone know of a similar one for adult dogs
2) is it safe to give the older dog puppy food.

Puppy foods usually have two main differences, one is the size of the pieces and the other is the phosphorus/ calcium ratio, which in puppy food is different as it is made to support steady growth.

It might not even be the food itself that is encouraging your older dog to eat, it might be the element of competition.

If you think she likes the Lily's Kitchen, it's a decent food so maybe see if there is an adult version of the puppy one? If you give them a call, they will try to help.

I personally would rather see my dog enjoy his food, rather than eat to survive, so it is worth finding one they like. You could take a look at www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk

You can set filters for your dog's breed, weight, age etc. and for your daily budget; then you can add in any specific needs you have such as aiming for weight loss or avoiding specific ingredients. The website will automatically show the foods listed in order of what the assessors believe is best quality, and it also will show daily feeding cost (calculated from your dog's age and weight) so you can see what gives you best value for money. It has its limitations but it's a decent place to start.

Texture is another consideration. I'm currently feeding a semi-dry - it is not quite as hard as a kibble, you can make an indentation with a fingernail. It also has quite a strong odour / flavour which appeals (yes, I am that dog food nerd who has tasted it). If it is of interest, they will send you samples.

I use natures menu country hunter wet for my 13 month old toy poodle which is suitable from 20 weeks before then I used butchers puppy perfect wet. I also use canagan piccolo dry food (available from Pets Corner) which is suitable from 8 weeks, they are both grain free.I am lucky Teddy is a good eater and eats the two mixed together. However Rusty the taller one in the photo was terribly fussy and I used the natured menu country hunter for him and Pepe my other one in the photo. They only had wet food and it was sometimes a struggle to get Rusty to eat that I would often have to hand feed him a bit to get him going. Pepe was fine but wasn’t keen on the dry food either. I can fully understand your worries with your miniature poodles it seem to be the luck of the draw whether they are good eaters or not.
