The fact that I said I wanted a dog who is aggressive and assertive don’t mean some of you have the right to throw shades at me. From where I come from dog is like a weapon. We get dogs mainly for security and protection purposes. The fact that you think otherwise doesn’t mean I should do the same. We all have different priorities and reasons for owning a dog. Please learn to respect that. These days most folks have drifted from the main purpose of having a dog. In the olden days dogs were used as a weapon, in battle fields, for hunting or bringing down a perpetrator and even more. I never said I want my dog to attack someone and trust me I am really familiar with the English language, so I know what I’m talking about even though I have a native language.

Im sorry if my reply offended you but you also have to respect that we see dogs differently to you , dogs are our companions our friends our family memebers and not all of us will agree with you that they are for protection.

And there is a huge difference between a dog bred and raised to be a guard dog or police dog and a person trying to make there dog more agressive. You have been told many times you dont want an agressive dog and you may even have the wrong dog for proper protection work.

Even the police have dogs who dont make it as they dont have what it takes to be a police dog.

Not all dogs were bred to be protection dogs or weapons either.

You have had good advice and its up to you if you listen or not but i think you should leave it at that.

Absolutely, Tedd. I may disagree, even strongly, with your views, but respect your right to hold them and accept that my view is influenced by my culture. I also think that you might not be able to achieve your aim with your dog, but that's a different matter - and several responses in the thread have focused on what is possible with your dog without judgement.

We all need to learn from and respect other cultures and viewpoints - in some countries people would be asking for recipes, not training methods ;)

I agree with you Judy , i think another problem was i found it confusing what he wanted from his dog as one minute i was reading he wanted an aggressive dog so she will stand up for herself against stray dogs than we find out there not street dogs there neighbourhood dogs who gather on the streets and then he mentioned protection so i was confused on what he wanted.

He wants what we would call a guard dog then i agree the dog he has now is not the right dog for this.

I feel so strongly about this because i found out yesterday that my neighbour has a severe fear of Rottweilers ( one of the reasons i have chose to not get one now as i dont want her to be in fear in her garden if i had a rottie who was out in my garden)

Anyway she told me that she lost her right hand to the attack , it was a guy who had brought the rottie to be a guard dog and protect him but he did not do the right training and ended up with an aggressive dog who was unstable and this dog couldn't tell the difference between an intruder and his friend and so he attacked her and she lost a hand. This dog did go to a protection trainer but the trainer was clearly an idiot and so was not trained right. The dog was put down. So somthing for OP to think about. If it is a guard dog you want then thats why it takes a certain dog to be able to be trained to tell the difference but all needs proper training by someone who knows what there doing.

I think I should Rephrase on what I look for in a dog. I love and care for my dog the same way I will care for a brother. I don’t think I will be able to cope if anything happens to my coco (Queen). I love her to bits. My household treat her like family too. I have trained dogs, all pitbull breeds. I don’t mean any harm to my Queen, I will definitely defend her when there is in danger. She is very friendly with people cause I socialized her at a very early stage. So I know what’s good and bad. Are you saying pitbulls can’t be trained to be a guard dog.

Pitbulls were not bred to be guard dogs if it is a guard dog your looking for. They were bred to be bull fighters and then eventually dog fighters but not guards.

And even in the same breed not all will make good guards.

It is possible to train a pitbull to be a guard but you need the right pitbull and it is not your coco if she is friendly with other people then thats good. Well done for socializing her.

But from what you have said about her i dont think shes right for a guard.

Some dogs dont even need training they will protect you without any proper training for it.

My best friend for example has a Bullmastiff and he was never trained to be a guard dog he was rasied correctly and was trained to be good with othed dogs and people and was a really soppy dog loved people but did protect his owner without training, it shocked her as she didnt think he had it in him.

So coco i dont think is the right dog to do proper protection work but she may if your bond is strong enough protect you without it.

Thanks for the info. My home is not fenced, so she sleeps in the porch. Any time she hears footsteps approaching the compound she barks viciously. We normally play on our compound and she doesn’t tolerate any body there at nights. Other times too when we are on walks and a stranger shows up unexpectedly she guards and warn me. I believe you can teach your dogs to master any habit, is all about time and consistency. I just wanted tip I didn’t know about cause I always want to learn more and my fur friends

Honestly it sounds like she will protect you without any training. I'd let her be her and not bother with the protection training. Sounds like you already have a natural guard then

Yeah but you know there is always room for improvement. Is sharing tip on how to get your dog to be a guard dog prohibited on this platform. No one has posted one yet

I think its because we are not the right people to ask about protection training , i certainly know nothing on protection training , you would need to find a good trainer near you and they would be the best people to ask

There's no rule against this type of training, but very few people have experience in it - even qualified dog behviourists will almost all be focusing on making a dog less likely to be aggressive in all situations.

But also, if this type of training goes wrong, it could go very, very wrong. And for that reason, I think it may make sense that we do introduce a rule prohibiting this type of advice (beyond referring the person to trainers who specialise in this type of training) - you simply don't know who you are talking to online and there is some spectacularly bad advice out there.

As for whether pit bulls are suitable for this work, I don't know. But I do know that Staffies, who are often bred to be illegal fighting dogs, are often abandoned because they simply don't show any aggression whatsoever. So you have to look at your individual dog and her nature.

Hi Tedd, sorry, totally.unrelated to your query, but I see your lovely Queen pic and she is a Bully breed. I was wondering if you had any insightful knowledge in their health and behaviour in general.I am very new to the breed and any tips would be gratefully received. I have rescued an XLbully she is 20months old and full of energy and love like a little bull!
