Hi, we just adopted a 3 year old whippet. Fantastic dog but I have questions about how much to feed her. Seems like she is hungry all the time!

Hi and welcome

I think the first few questions will be what are you feeding her and how much?

every dog is different and if feeding a kibble then use the guidelines on the packet (but remember they are just guidelines)

I have a pup and she was the same, we have increased her kibble and added carrot to her diet

more knowledgable people will be along later I am sure, but they will need to have a few more details on what she is being fed etc

Is that your adoptee in the avatar? What advice have you received from her previous residence? How much does she weigh? There’ll be more questions but, for the time being, that should put you on the right path. For what it’s worth our (now 5 year old) adopted whippet gets 300g raw for her main meal at teatime and approx 150g of other bits and pieces during the day, given as snacks or treats. She weighs 15kg. This however is our regime which seems to suit her. Congrats on taking on a whippet but I’m biased.

I love whippets too.

For feeding, look at your dog. If too fat, cut the food down and add raw vegetables for bulk. If too thin, feed more. If just right, then keep doing what you are doing already.

A dog that seems hungry all the time may not actually need more food. There could have been a time when your dog went short of food, or she may just be a dog that enjoys eating.

Don't know if you are experienced with whippets or other sighthounds. A good indication of a fit and health dog is being able to see the first three ribs through their coats. A nice fine outline of the three ribs is classed as being perfect for a whippet.
