Hey! I recently got a whippet puppy. He is 10 and a half weeks old. This is his 5th night with us. Luckily he settles very quickly in his crate and doesn’t whine at night. Last night I set 2 alarms to take him to toilet, both times he got up and went with me (successfully eliminated!). Tonight I have gotten up at the same time but he didn’t want to get out of bed. I got up again an hour later but same thing. Is it likely he can potentially sleep through already? I find it hard to believe but he doesn’t seem to want to come out with me and hasn’t had any accidents (yet - it’s almost 3am so there is still time!). Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, welcome.
Yes it is possible for a settled puppy to go through a reasonable length night without a wee.
I would though, still keep your routine the same for a few more weeks and continue to offer a wee half way through to keep this routine positive. Hopefully to avoid any unwanted accidents.
We all love puppies here and even better some pictures please.
Updates are always welcome. :)

Thank you that’s helpful to know I did go in one last time at 4am but he still didn’t want to come out. He woke at 7am (our new morning routine!) and couldn’t wait unfortunately so might be worth me going in at around 5am for a toilet break. I have added a photo of him he’s very cute!

What a gorgeous pup!

You are doing really well, and i compliment your management skills! Remember at his age he is like a toddler and doesn't always recognise his need until it's too late, which is what happened this time. He was nice and warm and comfy, and didn't think about anything else. Whippets in general love warmth and comfort, and do housetrain very quickly, so you are doing exactly right, and soon you will have a housetrained pup.

Thank you for the reassurance, that’s really good to hear. I have never had a pup before. I feel a bit like a fish out of water, just learning as I go and unsure if I’m doing the right thing so good to hear maybe I am :) crate training seems to be a whole other ball game though and I’m finding it really tough. But perseverance I guess and fingers crossed we will get there!

You don't need to use a crate if it's not working out for you. But you might just be going too fast. Have a read of this article by the behaviourist Emma Judson:

Thank you, I think I must be going to quickly. We have set up a baby gate in the kitchen thinking maybe he would get on better in a bigger space during the day. I will be sure to read that article though! I appreciate any help and advice I can get right now

Shout out if there is anything else you need pointers on.

And Kikopup on YouTube is a great resource for short training videos, covering everything from basic manners to cool tricks (the trick training can be done later though).

Thank you, that is very kind of you. I will definitely have a look at those videos! I appreciate it

He’s such a good looking chap. Big welcome from Mabel and me.

We have very successfully been using a crate with our two whippets, Orni and Sassi, who’ve just turned 16 weeks. They love going into their crate for sleep or if we need to go for our walk or at night. We give them a special whole little air dried fish and that’s the only time time they get one. They are never ever put in for being naughty. They have always been extremely good in there. Maybe because there are two of them! People criticise us for having got two sisters but that is what we wanted and what suited us. The past two months had have been the hardest period of our lives but that is no doubt because of our age. They are extremely sweet natured and have clearly bonded, Sassi with me and Orni with my husband. We do know they will always have their bond together but we also work with them individually.

He is a beautiful baby! Mabel, too! They are all so very, very special.
Thank you for the compliment re Mabel. No disrespect to other breeds but I’ve found that there’s something very special (in MY opinion I hasten to add) about sighthounds. A very gentle nature. We’ve only had rescues so I’ve met very few puppies. Keep the faith.

Glad to hear your getting on so well :) we would have probably gotten 2 but were advised not to have 2 puppies as 1 would be enough work to start with nice to hear you have such a lovely bond with them too I guess every puppy/dog is different. We will get there eventually with our little boy, it’s just going to take patience and commitment to get it right
