nobody's replied to you and I can guess why,

so here's my totally unbiased, unprofessional, non-expert humble reply........

there has to be a reason you want to produce a litter, good reasons are

you want to continue the line

you want another show/working whippet from same line

you have excellent pedigree in your dog,

your dog should have proved he's good, either in the working area or by winning shows

he should be fault free with 2 descended testes

you should be able to offer a lifetime guarantee that you could take back the pups if something untoward happens

you should be available to help with the care of the bitch/new puppies

you could research all the topics about whelping on here, especially the tragic ones where 1 or no pups survive, or even the mum dies

NB:- any expenses related to pregnancy/whelping are excluded from insurance cover

POOR REASONS FOR WANTING TO PRODUCE A LITTER

maths....eg :- 8 pups at £400 each = XXXX (minus all connected costs)

from what I can gather on here from people that know more, he's very young to be a sire.

If you still want to plough on, people on a forum like this would want to see his 5 generation pedigree, and/or list of what he's won/good at if not a pedigree.

So hope this helps :D

having owned studs in a few breeds over the years and having also lectured about the care of the stud dog and brood bitch i would also add the following.(this is purely my own experiences)once a dog has been used at stud hes not your 'baby' any more.hes been introduced to the world of sex and he would probably like to repeat the experience so be prepared for the following.he may run off when he can smell an in season bitch in the area.he may start to cock his leg indoors and put his scent down.he may get aggressive with other male dogs.whenever i sold a male to someone and they told me that someone wanted to use him at stud id say forget it!and id try to talk them out of it.also i had problems with one stud dog who went for a while without a mating after being used quite a bit by breeders.he came out in a really bad skin rash with raised weals across his body.when we took him to the vet it was due to blood pressure as he was frustrated! (w00t) :- " i always say what theyve never had they never miss so if its just a one off youre thinking about then id say dont! ;) theres more drawbacks to this than advantages!

Whippets can change very greatly in temperament in the first few years so you cannot really be sure of your dogs full nature for quite a while yet, and many whippets mature comparatively late. Also it is good to wait a few years for any health problems to emerge and you are sure your dog is robust enough in all his qualities. Finally it's not always that easy to get a successful mating; it took our dog many years to work out what he was meant to do.

That's funny - mine actually lost interest in it and became more contented after he finally got to find out what it was all about

My Bean just went rather mellow and affectionate and no he's never gone off after in season bitches etc etc. I bet that Gelert didn't lose interest in having sex with a standing bitch Elizabeth just that he realised the difference between one wanting to mate and one that wasn't ready. He knew not to waste his energy. ;)

Yes, I was a bit anxious about it changing his nature, but he was like Bean. Then he went back to ignoring ones on heat and being interested in ones that definitely weren't again  At least all 12 year old castrated yorkies can breathe easy these days; we've got beyond this stage :b
