Ive just looked at his pedigree and have to admit it the first time Ive seen a racing greyhounds pedigree that is `line bred `,

All the others ive seen are just Greyhounds to Greyhounds . Maybe cos hes from Austrarlia

what a loss to the greyhound industry RIP old fellow :(

crikey jax i didnt know they did A.I. in dogs.i knew they used it in horses and cattle but dogs?i knew some famous dogs had their sperm taken and frozen cos they were valuable  dogs to the breed and so their sperm could be used when they died also its frozen and shipped all over the world but  what if the bitch  lives in the next county and is just coming for a visit?dont they even allow the dog to do a natural mating then?  poor beggar :b
These dog's have golden ball's kris, and there is no way,the stud keeper's would take a chance with a bitch that might do him serious damage, and put him off mating bitches. This dog made his owner a millionare. So he was worth a couple of bob.Cant believe you did'nt know that AI was being used with dog's.My Alannah know's that, and she's only 7,and know's absolutely nothing about dog's.She's even seen it done, only through the vagina, when our Silver dog was taken with a Saluki, who would'nt stand.Nothin frozen about his semen mind.As fresh as daisy it was.The vet was able to look at it through a microscope, and even tell the % of live sperm.(Sperm count).Martin Tucker on here run's a stud farm ,and does the AI.

i didnt know that this particular dog was so famous or was worth so much money tbh.just thought he was a well known stud dog but didnt know how well used he was! (w00t) ive used many champions at stud in a few breeds but none of them had their sperm frozen and none had it done by A.I.it was always the natural method we used! :b i did say i knew that A.I.was used just thought it was more for the american/australian market cos of the vast distances between a dog and a bitch that it was shipped frozen across the us and australia.didnt know that there were many dogs in the uk or ireland who were so valuable as to not be allowed to mate with a bitch. there again i only know about show dogs not racers so didnt realise the vast sums of money to be made and the vast numbers of dogs that dont make it and who just 'disappear' as 'wastage'.im amazed that a 7 year old knows about this if she doesnt know anything about dogs. my daughter was brought up with dogs but i very much doubt she knew anything about this sort of thing at that age.

Only reason she know's,was that she was with me the day it was done, and as i had to hold Silver, while the vet milked him,so to speak, she seen all that was going on.One thing about Alannah though. She ask's an awful lot of question's,so i guess that's why the wee brat know's so much. You would laugh at her ,trying to massage the greyhound bitch.Only help i have around here.

I know this sounds very cynical , :- "  but how do you know 100% that the sperm you are getting is for said dog.
I mean Top honcho was black and its so easy to `ring ` these dogs , Many years ago I helped with a guy who had a black litter , all peas in a pod , some were registed and tatooeD and others not  ;) . Unfortualetly none of them turned out to be that great anyhow  :b

It was mentioned years ago about there being more than 1 Top Honcho at stud  What with the amount of stud work he was getting

When the Steward come's tom inspect and mark up the pup's at around 10/12 week's,and think's summit dont look right, with say a fawn pup, among a litter of black's or blue's,then he will quite often ask to blood test the entire litter.Well that's if he's worth his wages.Pretty often, litter's are blood tested anyway at different time's.If a kennel has 2 or 3 litter's on the go at the same time,it is the Steward's responsibility to inspect all litter's and act as he see's fit, usualy testing all litter's.But as you say Jax, it has been done, but it is usualy a couple of honcho pup's that would be used in a litter from another dog,to boost the brood up,for future sale of litter's,if the Honcho pup's made the grade. If a couple of honcho,to a good brood, were slipped into a litter of otherwise crap pup's,and turned out open class, then that brood would be worth £1000s,and her next pup's who would probibly end up useless too, would still fetch a mighty price.Crooked ,crooked world, and one you want to steare clear off.Now aday's it's not the dog you are racing against,as it's who's using the best stuff.A dog usualy come's out,and knock's 3/4 of a second of it's best ever time, and disapear's.

Stands well back for fireworks  :nuke:

This dog was

The Elvis P for music

Kate Moss for the Fashion world.( I like her)

Mandela for Statesmanship

Pele for Football.

Christ for religion.

The 3 great sires of the last 40 years.

Monalee Champion(Irish), Sandman(American) and Top Honcho(AUS)

My vote of the greatest would be Sandman., a hell of a lot would not agree, but they are all legends

thanks for the info. didnt know we were talking about such a famous dog.all the more shame hes died

what age was Honcho?

I remember reading something about AI in some other breed of dog and being surprised it was allowed by the KC -- or is it only in certain cases (like rare breeds, to increase the gene pool by facilitating matings between dogs which live far apart). In normal circumstances I would fear AI decreases genetic variety as 'everyone' breeds to the same sire. Would the use of frozen sperm after the dogs' death really be allowed? (if so, for how long?)

Not an expert on this so take as face value

No sure about Ireland but is allowed in America and England( I think)

Talked to a trainer( J Haynes) who took Frozen From a sire in Aus and breed a litter of pups.

The interesting fact was that with Frozen sperm only lives for a couple of hours after being inserted( normall sperm last a couple of days), resulting small litters or no litter at all.

at least he reached a ripe old age -- well past his prime for breeding as well as for racing

my question about the acceptability of artificial insemination referred to the Kennel Club, to show dogs more than to race dogs

welcome to the real world of greyhound men who only do it for money, greyhounds are not kept as pets to these men, they are money making objects and once they are past that they get rid of them.thats why there are so many horror stories on tv papers etc.if this dog made its owner a millionaire it should have had its own chair by the fire and got spoilt rotten.but my guess is it didn;t.  rip honcho you deserve it.maybe you will have a special place where you have gone.

Quite agree with you there DD :(

Its much the same with horses though isnt it :( , but you cant take them home to live by the fireside :- " . but there are places to take them and reschool them to be able to go to a new way of life . eg eventing , show jumping or just general hacks

My friend Sue who has had 3 litters, loves her dogs and any that dont make the grade or go lame are found pet homes , It was on that condition with her husband that she agreed to have any litters at all , cos Paul does insist on keeping all pups bred by them (w00t) and her litters have been 10. 6.and 10 (w00t) So far she has found some super homes too , and shes quite happy to keep any until the right home comes along :huggles:

Racing Greyhounds are registered with the NGRC and/or the ICC and have nothing at all to do with the Kennel Club ;) , so any rules by them wouldnt hold with GH breeding
