hi there ,i think the reason that some people are so negative is because of the amount of rescue cases that have been cropping up latley i for one have a rescue case and ther not a pretty sight ,ther are so many litters and whippet puppies around lately its unreal and some of these will end up as rescue cases, and as somone else said earlyer in this post just because you have homes linned up at the moment whats the bet by time ther born and weaned some of them will pull out ,but this is just my opinion ,i also think you are getting negative coments towards you because you dont sound like you know what to expect as your asking many questions and all these questions should have been answered before you even considered mating and as you said youve already done a mating before so shurley you should no what to expect ,i hope things work out for you :thumbsup:

well said nicky :thumbsup: please dont think breeders are negative everyone that has posted has very valid points if you pm them maybe they would help you further after all we all have to start somewhere i have only just got into the showing side of things and everyone i have approached has been very helpful and only too pleased to help good luck with your litter :thumbsup:

No the reason I wished my girl to have a litter is (a) My mum's dog recently died from kidneys failing. (b) there are many medical benefits from having a litter before spaying which we intend to do © I have already looked into homes for the puppys if she does indeed have them (I have homed 7! and there not even conceved yet)

This is her best season according to the books and people i have consulted, as its the season closest to her second birthday.

I would have informed the forums of the arrival of the puppy and the death of our oldest dog but my mother has been ill of late and i am her only carer.

Sorry don't seem to be good reasons to me, any of them. I would wait until she is at least two years old, and then research your market. There are an awful of litters out there, are they all to get good loving homes? Don't have a litter unless you are prepared to keep ALL the puppies.

The FIRST stud dog was UNINTERESTED and I was ADVISED to find another.

I have found a puppy thankyou for asking.

My bitch IS two years old in may ooh er about three weeks away.

The owner of the FIRST stud dog SUGGESTED this dog as his dog wasn't interested in my bitch.

This will be my last post to you, I have learned my lesson.
 
The answer your question , NO they dont have to be tied for a full litter to be conceived , My mayzee ( nearly 16 ) was the result of a `slip` mating :cheers:

and of course even if they `tie` you aint forced to get pups anyhow :- "
 
If you have your pup, then you are hardly going to want a whole litter running around as well?

i have to second that, after seeing the puppies on tuesday, the thought of havin pups is a lovely idea but there is no way we could do it as we dont have the room to keep anything up to 10/12 pups if we couldnt find homes, i think thats one of the big things you need to think of. i would much rather wait for pups to be born, get to wait for a preffered line/colour and of course dog or bitch. which is somthing you dont get if you breed your own, you dont get to choose wheather you have dogs or bitches you dont get to choose the colours.

you say you have 7 homes lined up, but even if those 7 homes still want them by the time there born, whats to say you have 3 wanting dogs and 4 wanting bitches and you have 10 pups = 2 bitches and 8 dogs, what will happen then? that would leave you with 5 dogs that you need to home. not worth the hastle imo.

just like to say good luck what ever you decide or if she is already with pup good luck with them :luck: :luck: :thumbsup:

I don't believe that this is nasty at all.

A lot of important and valuable information has been provided to a novice breeder, which will hopefully prove useful to not only the original poster but others.
 
Some of the post may have read harshly but posters are only trying to give their opinion/experiences. Slips matings can work (my Lexy is proof of that) so can tie matings not work.

If the intended mother is only just coming upto 2 years there is more than ample time to find out more. I have only just contemplated having a litter from my 3 and a half year old(who actually missed :( )

I dont want this to sound like I am witch hunting but feel I need to add a few things.

Someone that has bred a bitch is a breeder. As you say yourself you have had a litter before. What is your idea of a breeder?

Bitches do not need to have a litter before being spayed. But they do have to be mature In my opinion.

My bitch Megan is the same age as your bitch she will be 2yrs old in May. I was thinking about mating her but I really do not think she is mature enough yet so will wait and see later in the year. I know you have now mated your bitch but I wish you had come on here and asked before if the timing was right.

Now you may have a pregnant bitch so please dont get the hump and leave the forum. I have never had a whippet litter although I am experienced with other breeds so when I do have one I will be here asking all sorts of questions. Some may be so obvious and silly to some more experienced breeders but I would rather ask a silly question than take a risk.

We are all very passionate about our dogs and want only the best for them.

I hope all works out well for your and your dog, but please stay on the forum and get all the advise you will need

I've been asked to look at this thread and I've removed some of the negative comments of a slightly more personal nature that don't really help but some good and well meant advice is also on here so I'll leave the topic open for now. Please keep it civil an constructive though (as most of you have) :thumbsup:
