My dogs have always been wormed with drontal plus every three months but two of them will try anything not to take it and needless to say they are the two who eat all the rubish of the day when out if they can.

I have always broken the tablets into small pieces and tried to hide in fav food but it takes forever to get them down. This time the vet nurse advised me to crush them up in food and they would never know they were there. Wrong, only half their breakfast was slowly eaten, then re-served at tea time. Strom reluctanly finished his but Penny still will not eat hers. I know that if they are really hungry they will eat it eventually but would prefer to find a wormer that is more palateable to them.

Can anyone give any advice, please.

I use Drontal plus and they don't get a choice about it - open the mouth and put it down the back of the throat. Easy, gone.

Its quite a simple procedure actually, open mouth, place tablet far back of throat, close mouth, a little massage to the throat, and as jock says, job done

Thanks. I know I am too soft with them. Will try the down the throat method next time. :D (if I have the courage).

Hi,

I now use Milbamax tablets from the vets. They are smaller and easier to get down.

Haven't heard of these. Maybe worth a try. Do you get them from your vet or online?

I've switched over from Drontol to Panacur as it's effective against nematodes wheras Drontol isn't. I've been using Panacur favourites which is basically a dog biscuit, they smell meaty and the dogs love them.

It's still important that you can give your dogs a tablet if needs be and Keith's instructions are spot on, if you have any doubts, I'm sure the vet or their nurse could show you. Another slightly easier method I've found is to coat a tablet in cream cheese or butter or put it in a chunk of cheese. Thankfully, dogs are a damn sight easier to give tablets to than cats!

ditto and coated with cat food but mine certainly does not like it either!

How big are the Drontal tablets? If I need to dose Ruby with anything it usually is just put straight down her throat, but the last wormers I got were Panacur and they were enormous and very crumbly. I had a real job disguising them in food and would prefer something which will go straight down her throat. I suppose up to the size of a Disprin, or maybe even a little more would be okay.

Will let you know on the 1st August (next worming date) how we get on. Misty gets 3 pills and has no problem. She will eat them straight out of your hand. Penny only needs one so will use Keith's method. Will also try Keith's method on Storm who like Misty needs 3 tablets.
