Just wondered what peoples feelings were towards this. 'please be honest'..

Difficult one

Not many hare left around these parts so I guess I'd have to say against for this area, but other parts still have plenty I understand

I wouldn't approve of arranged coursing ......... just opportunistic when out and about

Defo for hare coursing the hare is the ultimate quarry for a whippet & no animal can test a whippet like a hare does IMO

"Hare Coursing" is a broad statement. I am definitely in favour of running winter hares in a genuine field situation. Most of the hares would escape none the worse anyway. As PM said, it is the ultimate test, and not that many pass.

I am all for lure coursing, but those that think it resembles coursing a winter hare on her own ground are kidding themselves. To maintain the standard of working dog that can still be sourced from generations of selected breeding the blood must be fully tested.

An expert bag chaser is just that. Speed, stamina and agility are tested to some degree, but the all important brain that anticipates the turn, anticipates the escape route, that matches the subtle changes in acceleration of the ultimate quarry, the determination to keep running on rough ground with burning pads and heaving heart and lungs, this is not tested. Some of the smarter working dogs will chase the bags once or twice and give it up. These same dogs will crash through whatever they need to in a real run.

If we don,t subject our dogs to the ultimate test the breed has no way of determining the dogs we should be breeding from, IMO,

cheers

I voted for even though i wouldnt go myself, i still think EVERYONE has the right to choose what they do with there dogs and NOONE should be able to say you cant do this.

you'll all know my vote (for) even though I cant personaly see it being brought back, had many good days out coursing trampling fields many more recovering from them lol.

The best days of my life have been spent walking fields in search of the brown and sometimes white hare . It is the ultimate quarry for any running dog . I`ve spent many great days in great company spectating at coursing meets too. I used to enjoy the Altcar club meets in the autumn , I found some really good camcorder footage the other week that I forgot I had dating back to 1991 , I really need to get it converted to DVD along with a lot of other footage from that era.

To have coursing taken from us in the manner it was defied democracy . It was a law made from bigotry and old fashioned class warfare, one labour MP said it was their revenge for what happened with the miners in the 80s. How many miners watch coursing and participate in hunting with dogs !!!!

Let`s hope a future Conservative government do the right thing and repeal this unjust law and we will be able to enjoy real coursing once more

i agree...i voted for , i LC my bitch but she has quickley learnt to cut corners and would love to see her at the real thing

for but i carnt see it coming back ,if it does they will be restrictions applied ,it will be like in ireland on youtube muzzled in an enclosed area and the hare always gets away.

I thought that the idea of coursing the hare was to test the dog ability to turn and chase, not the killing.

As far as I am aware more hares escape than are caught, the only couple of times I went coursing down here, not many hares, some good courses and no hares caught, there was always a cheer if the hare outwitted the greyhound.

I have not sadly been whippet coursing, I assume the same would apply, or are most of you just wanting to kill? If that is so, just go out and shoot them! (!)

To true coursing men, the kill is uninportant, what is important is the course itself, each twist . turn and wrench. The best courses I have had usually end with the hare making good it`s escape after testing the dogs to their limits. If you want a hare for the pot , then it`s a different story

That is the idea of coursing bertha & at the end of most courses the hare lives to run another day the dog that has been well tested will sleep all the way home while his owner relives the course over & over in his mind.

Its definately not the kill

Its the heart jumping and the dog running that is the thrill

Will she or wont she?

Where will the hare escape?

What is the next move going to be?

Fantastic to watch a good dog do the biz turning on a sixpence and pulling that little bit more effort from nowhere!!!

The ears pinned back and the mouth wide open like a huge grin as they return as if to say Well I tried Where did it go?

The thrill of the chase is unequaled by anything.

Seeing them lying by the fire dreaming about the chase is great to watch!!!

It's a HELL YES from me!

Loved setting off at midnight, driving through the night, walking through the fields for hours, then getting stopped by the police on the M61 for speeding after dropping Tony off. Good times. :)

please be honest

well I want to catch the hare I dont want to see a dog put loads of effort in and never catch one, to me the term its not about catching the hare is an excuse for having a dog that cant catch one, its great catching a rabbit but its better catching a hare, in some areas there are less rabbits than hares, and even in those areas you wouldnt come out with the statement "its not about catching the rabbit etc" if your dog missed , you would infact be pretty pissed of if the dog missed a rabbit in the middle of the field
