Hi, I'm after some general info on showing lurchers. Niether my boyfriend Grant or I have ever shown dogs before but our little Elsie (Whippet X Beddy) is getting more beautiful every day.

I'm just curious what sort of things I could do with her, if any :))

Like I said I haven't really got a clue what sort of thing is looked for either in showing or agility or whatever. I've read posts of yours on here and it sounds like good fun and interesting thing to get into if I can.

Any advice/info etc is welcome. Treat me as if I know nothing about any of it ('cause it's true :D )

and also finally sorted out my signiture so thats got some too, as you can see :p

Still would like some info on what sort of shows/ races/ agility things you can do with beddyxwhips if anyone can help me out?

Beddy/whippets are very versatile lurchers & are capable of most things, I do simulated coursing/agility & obedience comps with mine. I show him, he also does what he was bred for which is catch rabbits.

If you want to show her just look in Countryman's Weekly most lurcher shows are advertised in there, nearly all of them have puppy classes, you would need to see schedule as it can vary re ages ie sometimes 6-12 months or under 12months.

Normally no pre entry required, just pay £1.00 or £2.00 in ring, if you're not sure re classes just ask as they can be split into coat types (rough/smooth) or dog/bitch etc When showing just make sure her coats clean & brushed, ears & teeth cleaned, nails are cut, judges also vary from just a quick look type to thorough going over  Enjoy you're day out & remember you always take the best dog home

If youwant to do agility it's best to join a club, there is a minimum age to start, can't remember what it is, there are agility websites, just google it or maybe someone can post a link.

Beddy crosses can sometimes be strongwilled(not all) :teehee: so they do need firm handling, basic obedience training is well worth the effort. Good luck with her, she is

I think Mao has said it all. But the most important thing to remember is to make sure you enjoy your day out and don't take it too seriously. And as what's already been said - you should always think you're taking the best dog home regardless of what any of the judges might think.

I've got a beddy x whippet and I totally adore her - (even though she can be very stubborn).

Good luck with her

 ahh she's gorgeous lucky you

if you want to do agility with her then i find it's useful to train my dog stay under your hand- put treat between thumb and hand with word ie watch, and when she knows its there she will learn look at hand to get treat- then you can control her position better, no agility club until shes 9mths then no proper jumping til shes 12mths. She could play at going over poles on ground in garden and through things like tyres and a kids play tunnel and walk along a plank raised a bit for fun and same plank as low seesaw.

Your local vet should know about agility and obedience clubs near you. Good luck and enjoy every moment it flies by.

Some great advice, thankyou!

She does have quite a strong head on her, I think I need to get some specific obedience training done with her. The 'watch' treat in the hand is a good one so I'll definately try that. Going to start getting her to stand/stack too I think as it'll be handy to get her to keep still for 2 mins :p

She's pretty good at 'sit' and the toilet training is coming along well. She's not quite got the idea of 'fetch' yet but i think her extremely short attention span might have something to do with that :teehee:

Any other advice on training?

I've got an eight month old version of your little cutie. She can sit. Thats about it!! :- " I think all you really need as far as commands go is sit and stay. Fetch isnt needed because im sure as you know they'll chase anything that moves. :D
