Hello,

Poppy is poorly!

She was all tired and mopey yesterday and more clingy than usual, something just wasnt right, so we put her bed in our room for the night and in the early hours she was sick :(

She has been sick a few times today (didn't help that she got on the kitchen surface and ate some swiss roll!) and is still all sleepy and poorly.

Should I take her to the vets? I have been off work today as have been sick myself, right pair arent we!?

Thought if she was still sick tomorrowI would take her. I can't think of anything she has eaten that would make her ill. I'm worried about her.

I also wanted to ask about her first season..... What sort of age might it happen and what should I look out for?

thanks, sorry for going on :- "

Gypsy was like this a while ago, i gave her a little bit of rice in the evening and she perked up the next day............

maybe she has eaten something she shouldnt have.............gypsy does that all the time :b

hope she is better soon.........maybe take her to the vets if she continues to be sick

I think Hely has given you some sound advice

Thankyou for the comments.

I will give Poppy some rice for her tea, she hasnt eaten all day.

Nicky you are probably right! She does a lot of things when I'm not looking!

She just looks like she is felling so sorry for herself poor little thing. :huggles:

Awww, poor Poppy :huggles:

Make sure you keep her warm and also ensure she drinks plenty of water (even if you have to syringe dribble it into her mouth). If there is no improvement by tomorrow then you should take her to the vet.

Girls will normally come into season anytime from 6 months of age onwards, although whippets seem to be later rather than earlier  My girls have all had their first season at around 1 year old.

Hope Poppy gets better soon :luck: :huggles:

All my dogs ( 5 of them ) have had vomiting and diarrhoea in the past week . It didn't last too long and now they are all fine . I think there may be a bug going round

:huggles: :huggles: :huggles: hope she is better soon :huggles: :huggles: :huggles:

Have you taken her temperature? If it is elevated this will make her lacklustre. Hope she feels better soon. :luck:

A thermometer is a piece of first aid kit that every dog owner should have and use when their whippet seems off colour.

You should know the normal temperature of your dog. Take it when they are well and keep a note. Dogs are not good at controlling body temperature so it is essential to monitor it carefully. If it creeps up too high you can lose your dog.

In my opinion every breeder worth their salt should explain this to their puppy buyers and supply a "first aid kit list" along with the rest of the puppy pack, maybe even show people how to take the temperature while they are visiting the litter.

I cannot understand why vets don't ask their clients to moniter a sick dog's temperature, even when they present at surgery with one.

If a dog has a very high temperature keep them cool on the way to the vet with cold cloths and wrapped ice packs.

Thanks, that is really good advice.

You take a childs temperature when they are ill!

I don't know how to take her temperature though :b

Poppy has had some dinner and seemsalittle bit better, she even bit OHs foot to try to get his sock off!

Poor Poppy, hope she feels better soon. I think they all seem to go through this once in a while, given that they eat dead things on a regular basis it's a wonder they ever stop being sick. :x

If you have a digital thermometer with no mercury (preferably one you don't intend to stick in your mouth) you have to take her temperature rectally. Get your OH to hold her still and pull up her tail while you stick the thermometer in you know where :- " till it beeps. Anywhere between 37.8 to 38.9 falls into the range of normal (or so my dog book tells me).

Good luck (w00t)

Poor Poppy, I hope she feels better soon :huggles:

A bit of er......lubricant makes it more comfortable for the dog. I sterilise mine with Milton afterwards. Needless to say it is for canine use only (w00t)

I like farenheit thermometers but they are harder to get now. The last one I aquired was from a local pharmacy.

While I'm on the subject of temperature, for any newbie breeders out there with their first litter due here is a handy tip. Take you bitch's temperature two or three times a day in the week before her due date. A drop of a few degrees indicates imminent whelping, normally within 24 hours in my experience. This is really useful as if she goes for long after the drop you will know to get her checked out.

How is Poppy this morning?

Hope she's feeling better. :huggles:

Hello,

Poppy was no better this morning and spent ages just wretching so we went to the vets.

Poor little thing has a stomach lining infection, she had four injections and has antibiotics. She is going back tomorrow to see if there is any improvement and to see if she needs more antibiotics.

It seems to be working already, she hasnt been sick since and played for a few mins earlier. She is sound asleep now :huggles:

I feel awful, think it all the worrying! its horrible when they are sick/ill.

Thanks for replies everyone

Lets hope she's picks up now :huggles: :luck:

Awww poor Poppy, give her lots of :huggles: from Pixie and Rupert.

Hope she gets better soon Carla.
