If 'all this bluster about health testing' drew enough attention to the subject to make breeders plan to get all their breeding stock tested, then it wasn't just bluster was it?! :- " Seems to have been pretty worthwhile to me...

Anything which can safeguard our breed and prevent inherited problems from becoming widespread is great news in my book! 8)

Liz and the Monellis

If lots of people were up for testing their stock each test would then get cheaper too wouldn't it?...well a l ot of them would as you would be able to have group sessions?

Agree 100% there Liz.

Also remember that some people may have had tests done but either haven't got internet access or haven't posted on the internet that they have had their stock tested

I think it would be a good idea for everybody to send the results to the WHF database. By the way, I am sure that the UK Cavalier club has organized annual heart screening sessions with a cardiologist, which i am sure are cheaper then when people go individually???

I will only do the dogs I will breed in the future; that means Claudia, and I will have it done after Xmas. After researching all the option we have here, i decided that the best place is couple of hours drive from here and they do the testing only one day a week. It will be all day trip for us; that is too difficult while I have little pups.

I am very pleased, & relieved, that people are now taking heart testing seriously. In a topic listed seperately you will see that my lovely Pagan died in her sleep 2 weeks before her 2nd birthday.

Well done Patsy & Roger for leading the way in the UK inspite of the dreadful cost but be warned everyone. After Pagan had had her ECG done & the results confirmed by two specialists I then took her to a normal pet vet, asked him to check her heart & he gave her a full bill of health. I then showed him the ECG report & he said that he wasn't a heart specialist & wasn't able to diagnose these things. However, the vet who originally diagnosed it used just a stethascope & was a newly qualified girl in her first job for only 6 weeks.

So, unless you have a proper ECG test done, don't trust any vet & if your ECG is done before 2 years of age don't trust that either because most heart problems are mature age onset.

Also, when talking of dogs here, PLEASE use their show names & the kennel affixs of people you talk about otherwise those of us overseas haven't a clue who or what you are talking about.

Dexter went today to the Animal Health Trust at Newmarket for his eyes and hearing, glad to say that he passed both.

The cost of the eyes £38 and hearing £32.84

I am not surprised you are having Dexter tested after reading sarsanets post.

Patsy, could you please tell us more about the eye and hearing tests? What exactly did they do? Was it done by your vet? I had the torch into the eye examination done ($60), but was told that to be absolutely sure I would have to go to see a specialist.

And what do you mean by that

Just ignore her...you are doing such of a good thing having these tests done...I really hope people follow your excellent example what ever the costs may be

Maybe Bertha meant that with such of a shocking thing happening to Sarsanets bitch, that everyone should be testing without question

Well done!

I am hoping that someone will help to organise something at a Breed Club show or in a central area so that we can take advantage. It IS expensive, but definitely worth it.

I'm definitely planning on screening Drama before any potential mating, and I'd like (if finances allow) to also test Savvy and Teya, just to have on record, though at the current cost that may take some time to follow up on.

Hopefully as more breeders start to test and it becomes more common then perhaps the cost will come down.

The more of us who do this now on our breeding stock the more information we and others will have to make educated breeding decisions in the future. It may take some time, but hopefully this will ensure the longevity of our breed!

You are lucky that over in UK there is a large number of people involved with Whippets.

Here is only handful and spread over such a large country.

In any case, we must realise that the cardiac tests available now only diagnose dogs suffering from the problem, there are not tests identifying carriers. What we need is for people to report, just like Gail did, dogs diagnosed and those that died from heart problems. We then need somebody to do DNA research trying identify the genes responsible.

its the same with the lhasa apso;s if a dog / bitch is clear they could be a carrier of P R A we do need to bring in D N A testing to see if a dog / bitch is not a carrier of any defects

So we are all obviously insane on TWC (w00t) :- "

Not many if any in this country anyway are I believe in the position currently to be undertaking DNA testing as there is not I believe one specific heart problem that is prevalent in whippets, nor is it easily accessible. yes Seraphina I agree reporting problems is definitely a important part.

Obviously in the future this would be the way forward, but currently having our breeding stocked tested for those tests available is a very good start, until we are in the position to DNA test

There are some on TWF trying to make us go insane.

A very good post Jo, we can only do what is available at this time then after the money is spent it makes you feel that it could have been wasted because some people always want more.

Of course folk must work with the tests we have ... whilst working towards better tests ... demanding them of those in a position ultimately to provide them ... it would be insane not to.

In the breed at the momment you can not demand that breeders do anything the KC do not demand it. So just let all of us who care get on doing what we can for the breed.
