but dogs can pick up injuries anywhere, especially the back garden, , May i say what a good topic.
) everyday, but when they are due to race i usually keep them on leads for the 2 weeks before they race then its rest for a couple of days after then back to their free runs. They love it i couldn't imagine keeping them on leads forever and never letting them off where's the enjoyment of having the breed if you do that i know some people do but no way could i, i've had lots of injuries with my lot when they have been free running but i think it's just an ocupational hazzard with the breed all part and parcel of having one. everthing i know about racing dogs i learnt off my dad who was one of the best greyhound men in the area,it was he who allways said if a dog is kept on the lead when it comes race it will want to run. just look at my record with the good dogs iv'e had ,there must be something in it. :thumbsup:
IT WAS A METHOD THAT WORKED FOR ME
If a dog was bred to run, surely it should be allowed to do just that, not just for a few minutes up a track when the owner decides but daily as a natural part of life...sorry just my opinion

If the ground and weather are suitable, they go out in the field every day for an hour or two, even at peak fitness. This gives them the chance to be "horses" and, IMO, their mental attitude is much better because of this which makes them easier to manage and train.
I have had wins with every horse I have owned, bar one who couldn't stay the trip
So if I was racing my whippets, they would get to free run every day and chase bunnies, which is what they enjoy the most and, IMO, what keeps them sane
