Free Running (again)

Do you free run with other people's dogs?

I was just wondering as I do not allow mine to run loose with strange dogs but only with dogs that they and I know and trust.
 
mine only free run alone not even with each other heck one is 22lb and one is 48lb so never with another dog always alone. infact we usually try to make sure nobody else is around (especially hard @ the beach)
 
Only time mine run with other dogs is up a track with a lure and a muzzle. When we free run its one dog at a time.
 
I don't free run mine with other people's dogs. They do run together down the canal and really enjoy themselves.
 
i never free run mine at all when they raced. worked for me :thumbsup:
 
mine never free run with other peoples dogs, and i know who of our own i can let off with who :thumbsup:

all my non racers free run with frend dogs that i know but only let my racers off one at a time. and never let any run with dogs i dont know

:thumbsup: 1 mistake and you could have to dead dogs.only alone iom.

takes me 1 hour to gallop ours individually.

plus it could give them bad habbits chasing dogs.
 
weve always let ours free run,but only with my other dogs,wouldnt let them run loose with strange dogs.they love to go to the beach and run in the water. 8)

There might be a good deal of sense in what you do-Especially if the other dogs are familiar with your own-and introduced gradually-

Ours tend to gang up on 'other dogs' which isn't a good thing at all-and can be quite dangerous

If they had socialised with others they may be different-

Weird though how they accept their own breed-whippets/greyhound- I guess cos they come across them alot at racing events etc

Alot I think comes down to the time you have too-to socialise your dogs with others etc 1-1

We all seem to have our 'own packs' which is limiting in many ways.
 
I don't let mine free run at all with other dogs because they get to aggresive with other breeds, they are ok with their own kind :)) but i still don't take any chances and when i do free run them it's only 2 at a time, if i let them all off together they go mental :wacko: can't afford any more vet bills. Clare :))
 
Never have let all the dogs off together, one at a time this prevents mishaps ...
 
As you all know,through my pix,i do a fair bit of free running.But then im racing up fields,and not round nice soft sandy tracks.I think that dogs will get less injuries,if they've been reared in the fields,as their ligaments and tendons will be stronger for it,and they learn how to control their power and speed.Plus,im a great believer in that they learn their track craft,in the open fields,when they are sporting around,and also learn how to avoid each other,through time.Ok,you will get injuries.But you'll get them anyhow,even they're never of the lead,till they get to the track.Ive said it before,that if a dog don't get enough running,then he/she,will never reach their full potential.Ive reared greyhounds,for some big names over here,and if they weren't being gallopped in the fields every day,then they would have been taken from me,in a very short space of time.A man came to me once,to gave a grehound a gallop at the lure.Took him to my galloping field,and he refused to gave the bitch a run.Saying she would break her legs up that.I enquired as to how many dogs he had racing,and was told just one,as the other 6 were all injured.They had never seen a grass field,so it was no bloomin wonder.At the time,i was schooling a whole litter of whippetxgreyhounds,who had just turned the year.Not one had an injury,and their wee legs weren't half of what the greyhound had.He now schools in the fields,with a fair bit of free running,and only rarely has a couple laid up.Asi said.You'll get hurts if you do,and hurts if you dont,but they'll be a hell of a lot stronger in all departments,especialy joints,if they get using them from time to time.
