Iv had an awful last couple of days. My computer stopped working - it kept saying 'configuring updates: stage 3 of 3 do not turn off your computer' it would then shut down then restart and do the same all over, i got in touch with someone to help but there was nothing they could do except install new software - the old windows had corrupted or something. That meant i lost all my personal data but losing all my photos has really really upset me. Im glad i still have some on photobucket. I had an unbelievable amount of pictures - good ones that i would have liked to have kept. Its windows vista i have - has anyone had this problem? :(

My computer runs Vista and I don't particularly like it. I found it's predecessors much more user friendly.

I haven't had the problem you have mentioned, but my machine refuses to install any upgrades so I may have avoided it by default!!

I think I shall back up all my pictures onto disc this weekend, just in case. Thank you for the warning

:( So sorry you lost your photos :(

got no advice sorry

will phone you on Saturday night

Our laptops have vista and we haven't really had any problems although with OH's if you clikck on a link windows explorer crashes. I had to download firefox so I can click links.

I know how you feel my own laptop has died we think the hard drive has gone for the second time. It had only been mended 4 months earlier when it went again but the warrenty had run out. I can get it mended but to be honest I have more important things to spend money on at the moment but my puppy owners keep asking why the puppy photos on my website have not been updated but my photos are on my laptop and I can't get at them. I had already deleted them from my camera.

There have been many problems voiced over vista. When our computer went belly up and we realised that we would have to get one with vista loaded we opted for a mac. All the troubles that we got with windows have disappeared. To avoid losing data in the future why don't you purchase an external hard drive. We have one on our computer and periodically during the day it backs up all the new information including photos that have been added. That way, should anything go wrong, we don't lose any important stuff. External hard drives are reasonably inexpensive now and the one we have is not much bigger than our aol modem.

Yes we are having problems with Vista at the moment doing loads of updates like you describe so it looks like our might go soon too. I will get all my photos onto my external hard drive pronto cos I haven't printed out all my holiday photos yet. Sorry you lost all your photos :(

I hate Windows Vista with a passion.

When i bought my new computer I paid to get Vista installed. After a month of problems, I told them to change it back to XP. I didn't care that I had paid for it. It was terrible. The computer guy told me it was like choosing to drive a second hand bomb instead of the brand new model, but I have no regrets.

when my old computer crashed I lost my pictures too, bu thankfully didn't have my dogs yet so no doggy pictures gone :D

Yep its happened to my laptop. Had to start again  but luckily my eldest son had warned me how crap Vista was and how it was causing problems so I back up things regularly. ;)

Have to agree, Vista is awful, but back up to an external hard drive and you should be ok. Luckily for me I live with an OH who is 'in computing' and a son who is half way through a degree in computing, so generally they can sort any problems I can't.

ohhh you have me worried now mine have been installing updates for the last couple of days !!!!!!

i have windows vista and i lost everything a few weeks ago,i turned the laptop on and a message system setup not found,it went to be repaired and i was told it needed a new hard drive ,the laptop was only 12 months old and i hadnt backed anything up ,the backup disc cost me £50,i got the laptop back it lasted 5 minutes ,same message came up,it has been away being repaired for 3 weeks ,which reminds me i must ring to see if its repaired.im sorry you lost everything :(

we had a serious problem with one of our window set ups

we now use windows xp and so far we havent had any problems

my husband is in to computers and he has always done back up discs

I used to burn the best of my photos on CD, and now I also have external hard drive for back up. It really does not matter how good your computer and operating system is, things can go wrong. The only thing is to keep up with what is backed up and what is not :)

Good easy way is saving the best photos on Flicker or other internet picture sites.
