I decided that I would insure Toddy for his first year. He is one of those bumbling clumsy teenagers. I read to policy information on the website carefully and then opted for the cheaper version 8.75 per month that covered for the 1st years illness only and a lower max claim limit. The idea mainly being to have cover for broken bones.

The policy duly arrived. In the small print of 'exclusions' there is no cover for diagnostic proceedures and tests. I checked with Tesco as I could not quite believe it. If Toddy broke a leg, the responsibility for the X-ray, sedation if required for x-ray and any proceedures required to diagnose the break would not be covered.

DIAGNOSIS IS NOT COVERED only treatment. I wonder if all policies are the same?

needless to say, the policy has been cancelled. What a rip off!

please be aware of e&l my friend had a terrible experience with them and have heard several stories since seem to be very bad at paying out mine are insured with petplan and while i have to pay a bit extra are very good and pay out no problems and last year i had several things to claim for and they paid no questions asked it really does pay to read the small print something i know im guilty of not doing :(

Its hardly a rip off, its stated in the policy you obviously bought without reading the policy, which your fault not theirs.

 read the small print over and over all seems fine but who knows suppose its typical of most insurers they don't like to cough up we would probably be better off just putting the premiums away each month in a savings account but we never do would certainly be well in pocket if I had with Tillie's

e.g £12-90 pm for 5 years £774 one claim to date £300 - £70 excess

I believe E&L are notoriously bad for paying up - there have been several threads over the years warning people about using them

Mine are insured with Argos Platinum cover. As yet I have not had to make any claims but I am more than happy with the cover that they do have should the worst happen.

ive just been looking at them

my insurance goes up by £2 every year...is that the norm ??

I always worry, when people talk about 'putting money away each month' to cover vet bills, whether they have considered that their dog might cause a road accident - and how much that might cost them. Yes, if you are very lucky, your vet bills may not amount to much, but your policy gives you very considerable third party cover as well.

With regard to Equine and Livestock (E&L), my last whippet was insured with them. He had to have a biopsy on a lump which turned out to be nothing but fatty tissue. They paid out for the biopsy, but I had a letter to say that cover for any other lumps, tumours etc. would cease after 12 months, so if there had been any other 'nasties' I would have been totally responsible for the bills.

Same happened when he had a prolapsed disc in his neck - sadly he only survived for 9 months following the diagnosis, but had he managed to go on for longer, again - I would have had to pay out for everything.

They also 'load' their policies when the dog gets older, so you pay a higher premium and only qualify for payout on 60% or so of the bill.

The other thing I quibbled with was the fact that they kept sending me letters telling me that they had put me onto a 'better' level of cover, for which there was a higher premium. I did not ask them to do this, but had to be very careful to read every letter they sent and it was then up to me to contact them if I did not want to change my level of cover.

Beware ... I would not insure with them again, and have gone with Halifax this time round.

A friends of mine has just changed hers over to Animal Friends

You can go on their site and get a quote by clicking a few buttons. I haven't had time to have a good look but what I have read looks interesting.

I put £70 a month in a little savings account instead of having pet insurance, as i have 7 dogs. I looked into all the differant insurances and thought they were all a rip off. Ive done that for just over 5 years and it has covered all my vet bills and there is £3,700 saved up in it which would help alot towards any big vet bills i might get. Fingers crossed i never need it :luck:

We're with 'more than' and they've just paid us 106 pounds without a quibble for Grover's op to have his lump removed. There was 26 quid for the initial consultation plus 150 for the op itself. The vet was going to send the lump off for tests and that would have been included, too, but in the end it wasn't needed as they knew 100% what it was once they took it off. There was a 70 quid excess but the policy has nearly paid for itself at under 12 quid a month. Very pleased.

Sorry to go over old ground but do any of the companies you mentioned insure dogs that race- I doubt it!!!!

It’s a good job these restrictions are not imposed on human athletes, as it would significantly reduce the quantity of applications :b

No insurance company will cover your dog if you admit to racing it. E&L are IMO poor, I had awful problems with them getting them to pay out, my vet said he never advised people to use them. Mine greyhound is insured with Sainsburys, they have paid out with no hesitation when I put a claim in. Always read the small print, after all the insurance company is in it to make money!!!!!!!!.

:b Good point. 'No' is the short answer, for 'more than' anyway...I've never had to look into that so don't have any suggestions of other companies, sorry.

Made me think, I wonder what counts as racing though - eg if I took my dogs to a fun show like Stapeley and they got hurt fun-running, would that cancel the insurance?

As others have said in the past, though, how does the insurance company know you were racing?? :-

no free running wouldnt cancel your insurance it would just be an accident but just dont tell them they race dogs have accidents running all the time

We had our late whippet Jesse  insured with NFU Mutual, it worked out about £9 a month, when Jesse was diagnosed with bone cancer :( we

had no problems with claiming at all :) in fact the first main bill for x-rays, biopsy and then amputation was for about £1600, we recieved full payment in

the form of a cheque through the post within a week of claiming :)

Jesse went on to have chemotherapy and they always paid up very promptly

The limit was £4000 and they paid every penny.

Needless to say we have insured our new whippet Star  with them which is costing about £10 a month and will be insuring our new pup  with them in a few weeks time

Please check with your vet if they will 'claim direct' so you just pay the excess and your vet gets paid by insurance . Many vets do not do this if covered by E & L as they are notoriously bad at paying out - applies to horse policies too.

I should add, that I bought this policy online. The information provided for the policy given online, was not the same as that in the actual policy documents that arrived in the post.

I will be writing to the Financial Services Authority about this.

Thanks for the information on other insurers. I will have a look around.

Regards

Eve
