I travelled up to the WCOS Show at Newmilns with my friend who was showing. This topic is not meant to detract from the winners ..the dogs there were beautiful and the people exhibiting friendly and good sports. Congratulations to them.

However as a spectator I was appalled at the venue. It is a hall which is much too small for the numbers inside. Space for cages is inadequate. However I was totally shocked at the way the venue opened on to a very busy main road with no barriers to stop a dog running out into the traffic. Cars had to park on the main road and dogs unloaded in heavy traffic. My heart was in my mouth. This seems like a disaster in the making. Also there were no proper areas to exercise the dogs..just a small bit of concrete. People were walking their dogs in the memorial park next to the venue. I saw two people let their animals foul the grass and not clear up...in an area dedicated to those that were killed in the World Wars this is an absolute disgrace..those people should be ashamed.

I know some people already refuse to go to this venue. Surely there must be better places to book for next year. I am writing this out of concerns for the welfare of the dogs. BTW my friend didn't want to post as she is worried about upsetting people.

I think the best thing would be to put your concerns in writing to the committee, im sure it will be seriously considered Jan

I personally think the whippet club of Scotland is a lovely show,it has its own thing that so sadly missing these, there is ample parking across the road also a lovely park to exercise dogs, In all the years I have been going to that show have never known people go in the gardens next to the hall.

I am not criticising the Club, the exhibitors or the spectators. I am criticising the venue. I personally think it is inadequate and there are safer, better, more dog friendly venues. I was there all day on Saturday and people were struggling to park and were using the memorial garden as a dog toilet.

Are you saying I imagined this? Why would I make this up? I have no axe to grind, just concerned that an accident might happen. Many people have made the same comments to me and some very well know show people say they would not go to this venue as it is potentially dangerous to have a dog show right on a busy road. Most breed club shows are at Sports centres with plenty of parking and facilities. If a dog gets loose there is a long way to go and plenty of obstacles to stop it before it encounters a busy road.

This is my opinion. I will contact the club with my concerns and my friend will certainly not go back to this venue.

This was my first time at this venue and it wasn't as bad as I was lead to believe with the hall

being a good size.....

Yes the parking is on the main road or you could of used the Car Park which was just

across the road and was very quite and a park to stretch your dogs legs

James I personally didn't see any ones dogs use the memorial gardens as a toilet and had I

seen anybody not "pick" up after there dogs in this area I certainly would of told them to

and point out that there was a very good "Park" just across the road, maybe this is something that you should of done at the time and shamed the people that have No respect

I was told that this was the last year that this venue would be used as a new one had been found.

Sarah

The venue is ok, but far from ideal. last year when i attended someones dogs did get out onto the main road it was a heartstoppping moment.

Delighted to hear they have a new venue

I'm glad they have found a new venue. I wish I had said something to the people who were letting their dogs foul. However I was with my friend and did not want to embarrass her in front of her fellow whippet people. With hindsight anyone who does that is obviously an idiot or very arrogant and insensitive and should be tackled.

I am pleased this club has found a new venue for there shows. Lets hope all future exhibitors help the Committee keep the new venue by leaving it in a clean and poo free condition.

Good venues are hard to find, and even harder to keep in todays Health and safety world. Lots of venues are used for Day nurseries, sports facilities and of course people complain if the venue is not kept to standard. That is why the NWA lost Lightwater(whilst I was on the committee), not because of Whippet exhibitors, but other breeds using the facility and leaving it in a less than pleasant condition.

Good luck to WCOS for future shows ;)

I am so glad to read on the forum you are contacting the club James,

I do hope you received my personal message that you have not replied to as yet,

As you have stated in your thread there was not enough space inside the hall but if you would care to look back at the photographs Kenny and Pauline have kindly took when all dogs were showing,

as I said to you in my personal reply there were plenty of vacant chairs as ones eye can see available and ample space, also there were two rooms made available for cages and on inspection plenty of room for more cages in the top room.

There were 227 entries for the show which tells me there were not a lot of people as you have said that you spoke to felt the same way as you did, no-one came forward with any complaints regarding this.

I will look forward to hearing from you.

Good response.

So many are quick to condem but don't realise how hard it is to find venues that are dog friendly & have all the requirements wished for.

I have replied to your PM. I have not done so earlier as I have been away. I have decided not to put my feelings in writing to the Club as the tone of the PM indicates this would be a waste of time and you obviously think the Venue is very popular and cannot understand my concerns at all. I am sorry about this as I only had the interests of the dogs at heart.

James with you being new to the whippets I have read some of your topics, there is one particular subject you have raised about the rules, and someone you state has told you not to post your identity on the forum, you replied by saying " this is whippet showing not the Mafia", I can only say if it was the Mafia look out here comes the next Godfather.

As WCoS has found a new venue, there would be very little need for you to put pen to paper JHatton but I'm sure the contents of your letter, would have been read out at the next committee meeting. It is part of being a Secretary to bring ALL items received to the attention of the commmittee at meetings.

Its not the best sited venue we have , but the commiittee do their best .

I would think the locals will be delighted at our moving home as we certainly creat chaos on the road by our parking .but as it is only 1 day a year they seemd to cope , not sure about all the irrate mororists though
