an 11 month old rough collie was surrendered to a pound in Ireland "with all his paperwork"

I suggested to the people who do sterling work to get dogs out of Irish pounds that they should try to find and contact his breeder

I got this reply

"with respect - I have yet to call a breeder whose dog was surrendered into the pound that will run to collect him. In my view its a waste of money on the phone call. "

What would you do if you found that a dog of your breeding was in a pound (urgent!) or even in a rescue centre?

YES, we drove to Dundee to get one of ours back, a SIXTEEN hour round trip. She also got 1/2 her money back as per our contract. I then re-homed him FOC, he was almost 5 months old. Its what you should do if you bring them into the world.

I've contacted breeders several times about dogs that have come into our care, I wasn't demanding they should take them, but I thought they would want to know one of 'their' dogs was in rescue.

Not one of them would consider taking an elderly dog back, and two of them (one of whom is a very well known and well respected breeder) were barely even civil. None of them whippet breeders, I should add! I probably won't bother in future :(

Absolutely

I insist that if there are rehoming issues that the dog comes back to me ANYTIME

I will then rehome or keep dependant on the situation

If I have taken the time to breed a litter and then taken the time to ensure they are suitably homed then it is up to me to be responsible in some way for their welfare if the need arises and I hope that any of my owners would feel that they could approach me with any problems.

So the answer is most definatly YES XX

Boy, am I glad to hear that :sweating: :sweating:

I'll put Izzy in the post, special delivery, first thing tomorrow :- :p :teehee: :teehee:

......... seriously though, I wouldn't even contemplate buying a puppy from a breeder who didn't insist that the pup was returned if I was unable, for whatever reason, to continue keeping it

I think, in the main, the breeders who don't see their responsbility through are the puppy farmers and those irresponsible "one off" breeders who think it's sweet to have a litter from their much loved pet bitch :(

Same here, that's exactly how I feel :)

Always, what ever the age or circumstances, I brought it in to the world and it is my responsiblity to take it back.

It's very easy for a breeder to say the right thing but it's another thing for them to do the right thing .

How do we know the breeder of the rough collie didn't say all the right things ?

If they won't even take one of their own dogs that they had for years back then I really don't think they will take back any dog .

I am most definately not talking about puppy farmers here , I am talking about highly respected breeders :(

I didn't read the original post as relating to dogs that breeders had "had for years" just dogs they had bred

You're right of course that it's easy to say the right things but that is why it's encumbent on buyers to get to know their breeders well. Although just as breeders can sometimes read buyers wrong the same can of course be true in reverse ... one of my dachsies breeders said all the right things but given what I've since learnt about her she'd be the last person I'd trust with him if God forbid he ever had to go.

The original post did not refer to a dog a breeder had for years it referred to an 11 month old puppy .

In talking about a dog a breeder had for years I am actiually referring to one of my own dogs . Owned for 7 years by a breeder given away and then unwanted when that situation fell apart .

If some breeders can be so uncaring about a dog they had for 7 years what hope is there for a pup they had for 8 weeks ?

I know there are really good breeders out there and I am hoping to get a puppy from one later this year .

The point I am making is some of the breeders most highly regarded are not always as caring as they make out .

You don't have to be a puppy farmer to be ruthless :(

Oop's, misunderstood you re. what you were referring to :) And trust me, after my experiences last autumn I couldn't agree with you more !!

Annie

i'd take back one i've bred without hesitation..and have done with our Ginni, who came back at 18 months old, on the morning of my brothers wedding to be exact  her owner phoned up and said he didn't have enough time for her and could he bring her round to me, which was a relief as i would have looked well bombing down the motorway in my bridesmaid dress :D

i'd also help best i could with any that my boys have sired,

it's such a poor do that some people can feel so disconnected from dogs they have had a hand in creating, that they find the prospect of the dog ending it's days in a rescue centre preferable to giving that bit of extra effort into finding it a decent home :(

And you have done on more than one occasion, without question!!!!

Thanks to your help, two little girlies have a home for life now :D xx

I am not a breeder and dont intend to breed as there are enough dogs out there already. Any resposible breeder should take back one of their own unfortunately there are plenty of breeders out there that are not responsible. I recently rescued an entire english bulldog, through his microchip I was able to trace him back to the breeder and she didnt want to know. Unfortunately even many of the so called "reputable and respected breeders" have this attitude.

I have always said to new owners by contract that if the dog has to be re homed - at any age - it comes back to me. Have done this and also taken other breeder's dogs too  ( and yes, they were whippets)

Very well said, in my experience breeders really aren't as saintly as they claim to be...I've even seen supposedly reputable whippet breeders pass off their ex breeding "stock" as rescues and re-homing them through JR whippet rescue......really irks me that they do this because they are getting rid of their problem but denying a home to a real rescue dog that needs it. These types also claim they'll have a pup back if there's a problem but clearly they don't value the ones they've had for years..I know of a nine year old passed off as a rescue once it was surplus to requirements. I reckon they'd only take a dog back if there was money to be made selling it on again and these aren't puppy farmers either!!!!

please note that is from my own personal experience...however i only have good things to say about the breeder of my boy Badger who I regard as totally saintly for breeding such a good boy and letting me have him. :D

ps I know not all breeders are like this but many claim all sorts when you are buying the pup but once they've got their grubby hands on your cash it's a different story and so many of them sound plausible but are totally insincere...but then that's people for you!!!!!!

There are unfortunately several so-called 'breed rescues' which are run by breeders purely to pass on their own ex-breeding stock :(

Like everything else I suppose there are good and bad - breeders who really care and try to do everything properly and those who are less ethical, but there's no easy way for people buying a pup to know who they are dealing with.

If a person buys a dog off of any type of breeder ,then that person owes it to the dog . What I am trying to say is the breeder does have some responsibility ie the pup or old dogs owner passes on and there is no one to take the dog on . Have rehomed a few dogs ourselves for other people and never bred a litter .

I am appauled, but not surprised, to hear there are some breeders who refuse to take pups/dogs back that they have bred.

Its only due to the sensibility and grounding of my partner that stops me from taking in every waife and stray that comes my way. The amount of times i have seen rescues and begged him to let me give them a forever home.

so sad. I plan to have a litter from my girl and will gladly keep them all if suitable homes are not found.
