Goodness Rachel, I've been out all day and have only just seen this ... you must have been frantic, so glad it looks to be a relatively uncomplicated problem however alarming ... hugs to you all and healing licks to Sid from the boys :huggles:

Awww poor Sid :( I'm sure he will soon start to feel better once the a/biotics have kicked in Rach :)

Sending sid lots of healing vibes and lots of :huggles: for the rest of you

Thanks everyone for your get well wishes to Sidy....

He has slept since he came home from the vets.... he has eaten some dinner and had his first pill, but it was straight back up on the sofa next to me... it has put Ben out as he has been put on the same sofa next to his dad and that just isn't on in Ben's eyes as he is a Mommy's boy  and he wasn't happy trying to balance himself in between my leg and Sid's back.

Ian and I think we have decided what needs to be done so once Sidney is better we are going to get him booked in :b :(

Can I just say that, before you get him castrated, there is an implant now on the market called Suprelorin which has the same effect as castration and is ideal for dogs with prostate problems. The effect lasts for approx 6 months and it comes in a pack of 2, so effectively a year's supply. It is implanted in the same way as a microchip, sub-cut, and I can confirm that it works! I had one for my 14.5 year old boy Frankie because he has Cushings and is a bag of bones at the best of times but goes on hunger strike when the girls come in season so almost fades away. I was dreading the next season because he is so frail now but I was told about this implant, my Vet researched it and got a pack in, he was implanted and then my puppy, Ellie, came into her first season the day after! I was gutted! BUT he did not give up eating and has actually gained a 1kg, which does not sound much, but if you saw him it is a remarkable difference. So I can really recommend it.

Another new product out is ypozane, a weeks worth of tablets which deal with prostate problems for about 6 months but without giving other effects of castration which the supreorin does. The course can then be repeated when needed. If you are really against getting him done these are definitely 2 options to consider, we use them a lot now as many people don't want to GA an older dog. Castration used to be the only treatemtn really as injections didn't last long enough but with these options lasting 6 mnonths worth thinking about. These may be special order if your vets doesn't keep them in so might be worth ringing ahead if you are interested.

Thank you both, that has given us something to think about

And I am looking into side effects and what is in it all etc on the net.

Goodness me, I've only just seen this Rach, poor Sid. I hope he's feeling better today, sounds like some good advice above, and plenty for you to think about. Good luck for a speedy recovery for him :luck: :huggles:

i've been looking into using suprelorin for Otis and Owen, a vet near us has quoted 60 quid each for it but i'm checking round other places to get price comparisons.

of the reseach i've done the main draw backs seem to have been occasional reduced testicle size, (though this returns to normal when the effects have worn off), and sometimes it can have effects longer than 6 months, which might not be desired if you want to use the dog at stud close to the end of that six month period.

a friend of mine has used this on her dog with great results, he has vastly reduced grumpness with other entire dogs and is not in the least bit interested in the girls when in season, he's happy to keep eating during their seasons now and is so much more relaxed, and there is no chance of mating mishaps.

i naturally can't help but be nervous about messing with hormones but the research i've done so far doesn't seem to suggest any detriment to health.

i'm also going to keep a diary of any change in coat, skin, temperament, health, weight etc

hope Sid is feeling better very soon

Awwwwwwwww poor Sid..............Hope he gets well soon hun xxxxxxxxxx

Thanks for the details and links :huggles:

I have just got a new mobile so am trying to get photos taken on Sidy off it to post on here... have left Ian to do it and apparently he isn't happy with me as there is over 1500 photos on my old phone :b

Most of them you have seen of the boys but I haven't been deleting them when I'd uploaded them

Hope Sidney feels better soon whatever course of action you decide
