Hello everyone

Can anyone tell me if their whippet uses a dog flap we had one for our schnauzer and he loved it but we had it removed when he died now 2 years down the line we have a whippet and are wondering if it would be as good for him and if so what size should we get any suggestions appreciated, Thanks wellybob

  Sorry i just had visions of my three trying to squeeze through a dog flap together

Can't imagine a whippet doing this. Least I don't think mine would. Although my cocker (many years deceased) used to love using the cat flap and had been doing this since he was a tiny puppy.

Hi Wellybob My whippies use a medium size dog flap :) Its great they can go out into the garden anytime

Sure you whippie would love one

mine all use a dog flap it normily takes them about 15 minets to work out they can go in and out as the please but we have a huge one that the greyhounds use so wouldnt know what size to recomend for a whippet but even frends and foster dog that have been here who were so high and mighty there owners have said they wont use that love it. they all charge through it like loonys if they think someones in there garden

Hi, we went for the larger size because one of ours is a 21inch girl. If you have smaller whippets you might manage with a medium.

We tried them out in the local pet shop who were happy for us to try it out in the shop before we bought one.

Our whippets love it although it took more than a week of holding it wide open and getting them to jump through for treats and toys, and gradually lowering it before they would attempt it without help. Tipsy got the hang of it well before Pearly though!

Also - the kids love it - if the back door is locked they just crawl through...usually getting a good face licking on the way in from the whippets!! :p

we used to have a large dog flap in our old back door, all the whippets used it but initailly we left the flap off until they got used to going in and out. then we re-fitted the flap and they were all fine with it...our boxer dog at the time used to run through the flap with such force it used to fly off lol.

all 3 of my dogs have no problem with using a dog flap... its a medium as well.. took them less than a couple of minutes to figure it out... i shut the dogs inside and went outside and lifted the flap so they could see me... then just called there names and they come flying through lol... its great they can come and go as they please

It really depends on the brand of flap you're buying. Some are made to go all the way to the ground, some are set up off the ground. The real answer is "big enough for your biggest dog to fit through".

Take a look at this site as it has some explanations. It also has a lot of types of flap doors to look at--it is in the US but you should be able to find something closer to home! http://www.moorepet-petdoors.com/Articles.asp?ID=170
