I have always said the saluki is fast its just its style makes it look slow

Interesting Video

I've seen a lure coursing class winning Saluki put against a lure coursing class winning Borzoi

In a lure coursing match in France - The Borzoi Won!

Only true way to match hounds is on the track with a photo finish and eletronic timing.

and I will have to disagree there with you PARTLY Rob I dont think lure coursing really proves anything, nor do I agree that the race track does both of those are 2 maybe three times a day once a week for a few SECONDS at a time the true test is the dog that can consistantly put several dinners a day on the plate JMO of course

Shameless

your right about lure coursing, lure coursing often goes against the faster dog especialy on a tightly set out course as generaly the faster dogs cant turn as well as the slower ones so often over run the turns allowing the slow dog to score points and so win.

Ok, silly question maybe ... but if you are talking which is fastest taking live game (which I know isn't the point of shameless52's video but does seem to be implied in his later reply re. the true test of a dog being what it catches) then isn't speed of turn as important as speed running straight ??

if its a NON PED WHIPPET then for pure speed it wins hands down , a PEDIGREE id say just a little faster than saluki , but over longer distance the saluki is faster imo ;)

if the prey was to turn in a wide arc yes , but most prey jinx's or does 90' turns , on the whole outright speed isnt that neccesary as virtually every sight hound is faster than rabbits and hares in outright speed (initially) what is needed is stamina need to cope with the

1 exertion of a turn

2 the exhertion of accelerating again

the dog also needs prey knowledge which can only come with experience

a daytime rabbiting dog would probably need 30 runs over uneven ground littered with obstacles to put 5 or 6 rabbits in the bag, most of these runs will be as long if not longer than a sim course or a race,

hence why I think the working whippet is a little bit more impressive than the other chosen pursuits once again jmo

just a thought here

Kelly Holmes would be faster over 400m

Paula Radcliffe would be faster over the marathon

Who is the quickest?

Sorry I thought your question was on Speed - not stamina. "Dinners on the table" = stamina

Speed = rate of change of distance with time, I think this is more suited to track running.

Kelly Holmes may be faster to finish 400m than Paula Radcliffe

Paula Radcliffe may be faster to finish the Marathon than Kelly Holmes

Who is the quickest?

Quick - taking only a short time to transverse a distance.

So we need to know over what distance this hyperthetical race will be over, then we can extrapolate the time to complete this distance from their known personal best times and hence find the quickest!

What I find more interesting - Owen Slot's studies on 'the speed barrier'. I qoute ".. equines and canines reached their peek after their owners and trainers explored every possible advantage - training techniques, sports science, nutrition - to its extreme". So according to Owen we aren't going to get them to run any faster!!

Sorry - some thing about bit and teeth.

I've been into the records and found

Paula Ratcliffe's 2005 record over 42,195m has been calculated at 5.19m/s

Kelly Holmes over 400m is 8.40m/s

even allowing for Kelly's times in 800m which was 7.06m/s

SO KELLY HOLMES IS THE QUICKEST!!!

ie she runs 3.21m more every second she runs.

Which begs the question can you ever categorically determine whether a whippet is faster/quicker than a saluki or vice versa ... different race distances, straights/bends/etc. and different terrain will favour one or the other ... surely the best you can hope for is to prove that the whippet is faster is some cases and the saluki in others ... and that's before you get into the fact that it's only this whippet or that saluki in any given instance not whippets or salukis generally. JMO of course :)

OMG wheres the salts get yrs ready to..................................I agree 100% there with you, but it does peeve me when people say salukis are slow, in that video I think in the early stages the whippet might not quite have enough dominance to want to get past the saluki , but in the latter stages the saluki pulled away and i think(may be wrong) that the whole course was only 34 secs long, I think if it had been a better start they would have just about been level

How do you think that Saluki would have fared with our Tay Shameless, my non-ped that was entered in the Fieldfare challange coursing stake in the 90s :-

to be fair Geof for his breeding Tay had great stamina fantastic in fact and he was a f...ing rocket but its horses for courses Tays run was worth the day out to watch but he wouldnt have many in him like that . in that sim course Tay would have won

Yes one good run and that was him knackered, but what a run, we clocked the course at 2 mins, it would be nice to put that course on here, it would certainly open afew eye's.

But it doesn't work like this. Sprint athletes have fast twitch muscle stimulated, long distance runners have slow twitch muscles adapted for stamina. Both work differently and the sprinter cannot keep this speed up over a longer distance than the ones they're trained for.

I read somewhere that a staffy over an extremely short distance will be faster than a whippet and would be inclined to agree with such a statement when you judge their physical appearances.

Greyhounds run over varied distances for a reason, that being each dog has it's own particular distance that it is best suited to race in. I think the same applies with all running dogs.

i dont even have a copy of it anymore geof kept lending odd ones out and never got them back

I agree the Salukis style makes them look slower. In a short straight race i personally think a Whippet would take it not a kc one though.I pop to a Whippet club on a sat morning and the Whippets there do 150yards in a tad over 8 seconds which i dont think a Saluki could.Well not all but there possibly maybe some could do it but i bet they are few and far between
