Today I have said goodbye to my special boy "Cochise"

Cochise was my first whippet who showed me what a truly beautiful breed the whippet was starting nearly 14 years ago. I was only going to get one as I had the Dobes but of course Whippets took over. He was a master in the ring gaining his title easily, was called on by junior handlers as they knew he would guide them around the ring, he took to obedience with ease and totally enjoyed himself in agility. Cochise even became one of the first Delta dogs here in Townsville. He proved to me what a versatile dog the whippet is.

Cochise has always been the top dog with never a dog entering the yard not knowing, not one ever tried to take his spot, they just knew. With puppies he pretended to be the grumpy old man but when he thought your weren't watching he would let them climb all over him and play their silly games. They all respected him.

We have been through a lot togeather over the years, through all the highs and lows of life but through them all he always made me smile even today as we knew it was time he still made me sit there and think of all our special times before I had to say goodbye.

My hope is he is now running free without the pain that let to today with his close friend Whisper. Goodbye my beautiful special boy, my love for you will never die.

Sorry to hear of your loss Cristina :( , RIP Cochise, hope you have fun ruling the roost in doggy heaven

It's been a tough week for the oldies... here in NZ, two very loved whippets crossed the rainbow bridge, one was 12 & the other 15, I'm sure the kiwi critters have welcomed Cochise with open paws

To lose any whippet is hard , but when its the`special `one its unbarable.

Thinking of you .

Run free little man

A very special boy - one of the "heart dogs". Tears here as well.

So many of us know your pain Cris. Your tribute is so beautifully written.

This is the poem that I treasure when I think of Bobby. It makes me sob everytime I read it but it also brings me a calmness very quickly after. I hope it helps you too.

The Loss of a Heart-Dog

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep,

I could see that you were crying, you found it hard to sleep.

I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,

“It’s me, I haven’t left you, I’m well, I’m fine, I’m here.”

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,

You were thinking of the many times your hand reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore

I longed to take your parcels, I wished I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today, you tend it with such care

I want to reassure you that I’m not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house as you fumbled for your key

I gently put my paws on you, I smiled and said “It’s me.”

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair

I tried so hard to let you know that I was standing there.

It’s possible for me to be so near you every day

To say to you with certainty, “I never went away”.

You sat there quietly then smiled, I think you knew

In the stillness of that evening I was very close to you.

The day is over … I smile and watch you yawning

And say, ‘Goodnight, God Bless, I’ll see you in the morning”.

And when the time is right for you to cross the great divide

I’ll rush across to greet you and we’ll stand side by side.

I’ve so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see

Be patient, live your journey out….then come home to be with me.

Poet unknown.
