Jane do you think its because we have all got on FB its made usdifferent on here ?

Well I've checked and I still look the same :- :teehee:

.......... maybe  - perhaps we expect people to be as open and honest on here as we are on FB with each other, but we're forgetting K9 is a public forum and people don't know each other so well?

Open for speculation!! Might be a good thread to start up
Well let's find out then Jane, we'll see if anyone else has any thought's :)

What i dont understand is on FB we can say what we like to who we like,

there are no mods so to speak. But we can pick and choose who we have

on our friends list. Buy saying that friends do fall out but they dont have

the big rows that break out on here.

As you said though is it because we are fogetting on here we dont all know

each other as well and misunderstandings happen.....

I enjoy both k9 and face book, and have the same friends on here as i do on facebook as well as non-dog friends

what gets me on here there is certain little clicks, that no matter what, think your personally having a go, maybe sometimes i am, but i am who i am and wouldn't like to be smarmmy just for the sake of it,

i am the sort of person if you don't like me then thats your perogative, and vice versa,

with face book you are who you say your are, you can't go on as anyone else, but here more and more alias's come on just to stir or be down right nasty, but saying that not all alias are like that its the ones who have more than one account and come on, and think people are stupid that they don't know who they really are, if you can't come on as yourself then you haven't got any real gumption have you, i don't need an alter ego got enough with me being me

hmmm i think fb is a great way of dropping a virtual postcard to people you dont always get to speak to regularly, and is wonderful for getting hold of friends of the past, ie you or they moved school or town or whatever. its just such a random thing too. downside is that you can get complete strangers friend requesting you and saying weird and/or rude things which isnt so cool. i also know loads of people whove jacked in their account because theyve been getting grief from exes or extended family because of death and wills etc. dont know if any of you heard about that girl emily, who was getting bullied by a girl called keeley at school and then getting death threats from her on fb? shes my ohs god daughter. as i said, its great that people can get hold of you, but not if things go wrong for whatever reason.

k9 you can choose to keep yourself at a distance as it were. you can offer advice and sympathy, get to know people gradually until you feel ready if you so choose. ofc so many k9ers spend a lot of real time together, being friends outside as well as in, but for those of us who arent part of any circle or are new to dogs or forums, or arent able to connect outside due to distance or health, its wonderful, and i find forums more 'personal' for interaction.

do think those who make alterego accounts or hide under anonymity are a bit strange at best or out for mischief at worst. im me, whether here or fb, and dont hide that fact anywhere, so i cant understand the mentallity

I use FB quite alot now, mainly to keep up with my friends, and I do limit the people who I have as friends on it.

I quite often get suggestions for friends or people requesting to be a friend, but unless I know who they are or they have sent a message with the request explaining why they want to be a friend, I generally choose to hit the ignore button and not add them to my friend list. That way I can keep it tight and know that the people I exchange comments with on FB are exclusive rather than general.

I expect I am missing out on some K9ers who have been suggested as potential friends, so I should apologise if anyone has put in a friend request and I have ignored it :b but unfortunately I have never received messages saying who it is and unless their K9 ID is quoted they could be anyone!!

I tend to rely on the assumption that if I am talking to friends on FB then that's exactly what I'm doing, and like to think that I am not providing gossip fodder to be transferred to K9 and God knows what other forums  ...... but then that is what the personal messaging on FB is all about, isn't it? If I don't want the world and his wife to know what I am thinking/doing then I have to PM it and keep it personal

I personally don't like using Facebook to keep in touch with K9 colleagues/friends, so don't use it much. I realise there is more privacy on Facebook, but at the same time I feel less conspicuous on K9 than on Facebook, because it wouldn't occur to a lot of folk that I'm a member of this forum. For example, my boss's wife added me as a friend and I accepted her as a friend on Facebook. I now feel like I could easily be 'spied' on if push came to shove at work, although I'm certain that wasn't her intention. If one of my family joined Facebook, I'm not certain I'd be comfortable with them seeing all my whippet chat. Other things bother me too. We recently recruited a new member of staff at work, and one of the two candidates had a rather odd photo on Facebook. He didn't get the job! Can FB be used as a tool for such decision making about people...it seems yes!

Don't get me wrong, I like Facebook in that I've caught up with a couple of old friends who I haven't kept in contact with; that's the positive side of Facebook! I just don't like using it as a means for talking whippet really, unless I know the people well, so I feel I miss out on an awful lot, but that's life I guess. You're either part of the clan or you're not......

This doesn't answer the original question; it's just my take on FB. Maybe I just need to lighten up........... :b

I use both...

I like fb as you are only broadcasting to your 'friends' and we can all coose them...and choose to delete if needs be...on k9 I love to follow other peoples whippets and lurchers etc, but don't like all the trouble that some people try to cause and dislike the cowards who hide behind nother new name just to stir...at least on fb I need to dd no one whom I don't wish to!

I have found some wonderful life long friends through k9 though, and feel a loyalty towards it because of this especially and all the valuable advice I have gleaned for whippet ownership :D

I tend to use FB to keep in touch with friends I have come to know from here

Facebook is more personal as you get to know 'the person' and here we don't really know who we are as we have user names and our dogs

Saying that though, it is nice to come on here and be totally whippet, Iggy, lurcher and greyhound :)

Did that make any sense???

Exactly Ann, unless K9 friends see me say 'the boys' everyone else thinks I am talking about Ian and Rob

I pop in to face book sometimes but to be honest I stuggle with it.

I haven't really got into Facebook, but if I did I think I would use it mainly to keep in touch with family or old friends I've lost touch with.

I have been a member of K9 since 2004 and I still love it as I really enjoy reading about Whippets/Iggies/Lurchers - something my family members and OH don't really understand. :- :-

I do feel on occasions K9 can become rather bitchy which is a shame, and also I feel there are sometimes double standards. I don't see why people can't have differing opinions without things becoming inflammatory and personal. Nowadays I ignore those who are obviously trying to be controversial.

I don't get to meet any whippet people (although I have been to HOE occasionally which was good fun), so K9 is great for me. I do sometimes feel I'm not part of any 'clique' as I don't show or race.

It was through K9 that I got Remmy, who is adorable, and if I am lucky enough to have another whippet in the future, it will probably be via K9. So I will stick with K9 for now.

I first joined K9 in 2004 after losing Chip...and found my Oscar through the forum too...

although I find there are just way too many arguments and silliness on K9 now sadly and lots of the original members have left :(

Anyway I have since found Facebook and absolutely love it for keeping in touch with family and friends...the only problem I

have with it...I think some of my non-doggy...non-animal friends must think some of my pictures and posts on there are nuts

so therefore I can post pictures on the forum without feeling like that....if that makes sense too.

Some of my old school friends on fb poke fun at my whippety chat.. :clown: well let them I say.. I am who I am..

I also agree with Sarah above sometimes on K9, I also feel like Im not part of any clique too... :)

I like face book,,joined a while back,,but never used it,,But I found farm town and a few other games,,,I use it for games and just add folk I know well as friends.

It's good to keep intouch with family,,phone bill is smaller now,,,I dont race my dogs now,,but been a member on here since 2001,,,at the start of k9,,,I like to keep intouch with my racing pals on k9 and see how their dogs are doing. K9 back then was very small,,but is huge now,,I only look at forums Im intrested in,,,unless Im told to have a look lol.

I use both,i enjoy FB a lot of my work mates are on there and we have a good crack on it also its good to keep in touch with family both mine and garys are all over in the uk and abroad so it easer to keep in touch with them.and Ive found lots of old school freinds that I had lost contact with.

I do agree that on K9 there are clique's but I try to stay away from them and answer threads that interest me ( I do tend to miss alot too :b )but a big thank you to K9 as I wouldent have Phoebe or Pagan with out it so Ive a lot to thank it for.

And Ive made some very specal friends on here not naming names dont want to embaress any one :D

I have been a member of FB for ages and before that Myspace. K9 was the first forum I joined (even though I've been online since 1996!) - I enjoy reading about other peoples dogs getting advice and learning new things...the FAQs are AMAZING! I do sometimes find it cliquey on here (maybe I'm just antisocial) - but that just goes with the territory I guess as a relative noob who doesn't race, show or work their dogs! The main downside here though is the bitchiness - I'm sometimes shocked at how mean people can be to each other, especially as for the most part we all have such a lot in common (maybe that's the hippie in me talking?) Overall I guess I use this site as more of a resource as opposed to a community - but that's probably as much me/ my attitude to anything else.

As for FB - I am often STUNNED at the personal things/ conversations people have on their walls - rather than sending meesage...but then I'm a prude. I've just realised in this post, I have admitted to being an antisocial, prudish hippie! LOL - far too much information for y'all I'd guess!

I feel a bit like that Janis, I prefer to share my doggie mania with like minded folk on K9 rather than on Facebook where some friends/family wouldn't understand.

I've been a member of K9 since 2001, but haven't always been active and have taken a break occasionally. It's such a shame when active members just leave though isn't it, with no explanation? It leaves such a gap, and you end up wondering what happened to them. It's their perogative, but it's a shame. A small goodbye would have been nice....

I tend to stick around because I'd miss the members I feel I've got to know over the past few years. They are a fun eclectic bunch, and it wouldn't be the same without them. It's quite unsettling when some people just try to make trouble or just want to air their grievances all the time and give K9 a bad name.

I like face book,,joined a while back,,but never used it,,But I found farm town and a few other games,,,I use it for games and just add folk I know well as friends.

It has got large now hasn't it? I tend not to bother with many of the forums, simply because it's too time consuming.

I use both and still like using both. Like otheres here im not really part of a clique either, I don't have a show whippet or race whippet and don't know much about either but no matter what type of whippet or dog people have I enjoy looking at all the different pictures posted here. Since this forum has members from all over the country (and in some cases the world) I enjoy looking at whippets surrounded by different scenery also. I tend to stick to the general whippet forum as thats probably what I know most about and enjoy looking at everyones pictures of their whippets and hope some people enjoy looking at my pictures too. I tend to stay away from troublesome threads too.

With facebook I have many people from here on my page which I am more than happy with. When I was at primary school, 6 of us won a trip to visit Finland as we had a partner school over there, I stayed with two girls and later that year two came to stay with me. I kept in touch with some via post (before I had email) but lost touch over the years, just recently I have found them again via facebook which I think is amazing. The only problem I do have is when people that were at school with me add me as a friend and they rarely spoke to me there, I know we are adults now but I don't really want them knowing my business, but at the same time does it make me seem strange if I decline their invite. The other thing is anyone that doesn't know what its like to own a dog may think im a bit obsessive with all my Penny pictures, but on here and with all my whippety facebook friends im in good company as we are all alike. I think there is good and bad with both :) I am just glad that I joined K9 and met lots of lovely whippety people that share a common insterest :huggles:
