Thanks for your reply. I have absolutely no idea how many calories are in the treats I'm using.
For today's sessions I've been cutting them into thirds, so they are minute.
I may look into some low calorie dog treats though, definitely don't want the little man getting fat! :)
Have you considered a shih tzu? Not everyone's cup of tea, but I think they're adorable!
They were also bred as companion dogs, very people friendly and a low energy breed :)
I think this behaviour is completely natural. Altogether in my family, we have four dogs, who never, ever have bones around each other or eat together.

Personally, I would say your doing the right thing! You need to make sure that your puppy associates contact = good, and forcing it will definitely not be the right way to go about it.
