When I had A shih Tzu as well as my Whippet, one day we were out, two primary age kids, a boy and a girl were with their mum, (well ok it might have been their maiden aunt I never asked). The girl called 'Excuse me can we stroke your dogs please?'. I said of course and took them over, as we got...
My girl hates getting wet or muddy so she normally keeps clean. The exception is racing, if the track is muddy she still runs at full speed. However I always say her coat must be Teflon coated, I can put her in the car muddy but when it dries it simply falls off her so when we get home she's...
Ellie123, It is a bit confusing, as you said a cross between two or more sighthounds is a Long Dog. So yes your girl is one. But it could also be classified as a non ped Whippet in racing. These can be any combination, I have never been involved in non ped racing but most of the ones I've seen...
Reading JudyN's reply made me wonder what vets do around the country. My vets accept appointments, come out and discus in the car park, they then take the dog into the surgery then bring it back out and talk about the problem. Obviously its not ideal in that I would really want to be with her...
Lurcherman, sorry as I said I cant remember I think it was around the cost of vaccination but not sure. I'm fortunate in that the cost is no problem to me so I tend to pay then forget it.
I'm another that uses Titer testing, and so far she still has a high level of protection. OK if the cost is important I can see some would be worried, I can't remember how much I've paid but I realize that if her levels came back as low then I would be paying for a re vac on top of the test.
I would like to congratulate you for the very informative write ups you have put on the site. (Although when I started reading the resource guarding one I initially thought no way, then read on and realized you were starting by explaining what not to do). I am sure they will help many people at...
I'm the same as Lurcherman, any concern and I would leave them alone. as JoanneF said getting a pup is a long term partnership between you and the breeder.
With trick repeating, I have found its very different between dogs, after years of having Collies and Shelties I got a Whippet and she is totally different, three repeats would be exceptional, a max of two is her normal. I found the best is to have a number of things you want it to learn and run...
Cla_ire, we had one dog that was assumed to be a Border Collie x Springer, (she was a rescue so no one actually knew). The kennels first re homed her to a family, they brought her back after a couple of weeks saying she was untrainable. My wife had seen her, (she helped out a couple of days a...
I agree about good breeders asking questions, I have often thought it could be easier to adopt a child then get a pup. Joking of course but you get what I mean. I admit I'm biased but sight hounds do make wonderful dogs to live with, both Greyhounds and Whippets are lovely friendly pets. Their...
We were another that found having numbers made insurance to expensive, in our case it was five dogs and three cats. So we started putting money into an account for them and carried on till now. all our animals have had any treatment we felt right and the account has never got to low, the worst...
One lady at racing cuts quite a few dogs nails, she does it at the track before racing but after the traps are out. Every dog is more interested in the course than what's happening to their feet. I do Folly's nails myself with a Dremal, ok she does not enjoy it but she does get up on my lap when...
In all my life with dogs, although we have had the odd 'pack leader' (always by brain power and personality). They have only ever controlled our other dogs they have never tried to dominate a human.
I have a crate in the kitchen, it fits nicely into a gap. It is fitted with a memory foam mattress and a folded single duvet. Folly does appear to enjoy it but, and its a big but, not only is it not shut I have removed the door.
