Mine go out straight away, but I pick the places carefully and keep away from other people and dogs. Your call, but if he's already been running around on a working farm then his immune system should be up and running well. Just my opinion and it's your decision that counts.
I think too much backstory can be counterproductive (several of my careers involved finding fault to a forensic level!) as people tend to go with emotion - awwww - but choosing a dog should be about common sense - what they can offer the dog, what would be a deal-breaker (for instance I couldn't...
That's rather nice - so many people are so socially isolated that they never get to have a friendly chat with anyone.
Me - I like to get the transaction through swiftly but am always pleasant to the cashier. If they want a little exchange of chat I'm happy to co-operate.

I can't comment on the veterinary side, but I am so sorry for your loss. It's a hugely difficult time no matter how often we go through it, and I hope you are getting the support you need.
Rescues vary greatly in how well they match prospective owners and dogs. As a generalisation, I have always found Dogs Trust to be pretty good, but isn't to say other Rescues aren't good. A lot of it depends on the person you see on the day. Any organisations that rely heavily on volunteers can...
