Syringomyelia Breeding Protocol For Cavalier King Charles Spaniels I don't think screening is a simple matter for this dread condition though MRI plus other tests are brilliant at telling you your dog has it.:(The problem is the suspect genes are so widespread in the breed that to attempt total...

    First Time Owner

I think a cavalier is a high risk choice- I love them and have a sister who has owned two- it''s caused her heartbreak and she has a Tibetan terrier now. The worst health problem they suffer (I do mean suffer) from is one you cannot screen for, being a malformation of the skull. Google it if...

Adopting a dog of my own

Introducing a new dog is always a delicate business and needs care for the good of both as well as the owner! Probably now is not a good time. Your information about 'shelters' needing to get dogs out isn't really correct. The rescues I home check for have virtually stopped rehoming because it's...

    Crate Training new puppy help.

I totally agree that you are dealing with an infant animal so need to be really sensitive about doing nothing that will leave your puppy with phobias in later life. GSD's are really delicate when it comes to their natures. I have to be upfront and say I loathe crates apart from to keep a dog...

    Itchy puppy

Ah- another itchy puppy! Good advice to try diet- but if no improvement you can ask your vet to do a skin scrape to rule out parasites in the skin- very common in puppies. I don't think anti-bacterial shampoo touches them. And no you won't be able to see mites with the naked eye.

Is it common for older dogs to go off food?

I do understand, Josie! My suggestion about the broth was because it is quite low protein- I'm just thinking about the liquid here, obviously don't add any meat, you can even strain it- and a couple of tablespoons onto a bland diet might make it more interesting.

Is it common for older dogs to go off food?

This is so sad- I'm one of those owners, too, who just wants their dog's food to be a pleasure. I've not had to manage this condition so can't help much. I suppose you've tried bone broth as an additive?- or has it got the wrong stuff in it? It's the thing that always seems to work with a dog...

Please help! New puppy, very dandruffy and vets closed!

We've had four puppies over the years all from reputable breeders- yet two out of the four came with mites that became very apparent after a few days- some people believe the stress of changing homes cam depress the immune system and let the little nasties go mad. I'd consult a vet by phone- if...

New Home Needed Meet Jack the border collie

Have you contacted a specialist BC rescue? They will be able to assess and rehome him with just the right new owners, rather than have him get into trouble again and get passed on. At the moment you may need to wait (but then you couldn't have people coming to your home to meet him anyway could...

Someone help me out - which puppy breed!?

Half the dogs in rescue are from homes where the child/ stay at home mum/elderly parent thought a dog would be a nice idea. Then life changed (!) often after only a few months or a year and it was up to the rescue to pick up the pieces. :(

Someone help me out - which puppy breed!?

Sorry if this offends but you seem very focused on what you want from the dog and not too much on what you can give it. If I were a breeder I would not let a puppy go to any home where it isn't guaranteed a walk EVERY day. Rescues will have the same attitude and when I homecheck this is one of...

    Border Collie Puppy

I'm wondering about the special circumstances of covid 19 at the moment which will make having a new puppy really more difficult. Socialising will be tough if we're expected to keep up social distancing for some months- also it won't be possible to get the puppy used to people visiting your home...

    Worried

I've had cockers all my life and the one thing about them is their prone to stress reactions. I'd consider a physical problem as well. My last lovely boy starting doing stuff like scratching in corners when he started to develop kidney problems- maybe a stone in this case? I'd get a vet check if...

Rescue dog doesn’t like coming in the house.

Time, time, time. Our boy from Greece came in, ate his tea and went out and dug himself a den under the hedge on his first night. Coax with treats rather than carry in and maybe not too much fuss in general. I think these dogs can feel trapped inside and it takes a good while for trust to...

    Patterdale Terrier

Maybe even a terrier cross? We lived in the Lakes for two years and saw lots of Patterdales at work... Whether their owners wanted them to or not.. Also met a lovely lady here on Wirral whose wire-haired JR (looked like a little powder puff, never put a paw wrong walking on the beach...

    Mastiff Owner

You've had him such a short while. Hang on in there and let him relax- maybe the chewing is helping him cope with the stress of his big move. Also the aggression. Rescue dogs are often on edge because in their minds they've just moved into a territory that is occupied by other dogs. It's like...
