    Conflicting puppy raising philosophies

For the past two nights we've spent about an hour before going to sleep chucking our 5 month old puppy off the bed, only for her to climb back on. She has never been invited onto the bed or allowed on it, but she is a very assertive dog. She ignores the 'off' command - just makes herself more...

    Conflicting puppy raising philosophies

Thanks, Terry. I have watched the KikoPup videos and we do use these methods. We don't use punishments, nor do Alpha Dogs (despite their name) advocate use of punishment; it's all reward-based positive reinforcement. We feed 50% of her daily food by hand, as training treats. She knows 'come'...

    Conflicting puppy raising philosophies

Hi Judy, Yes, she's been vet checked. I don't think it included a thyroid test, though. My main source of (informal) advice is a friend who's had many dogs, and whose current dog is perfectly behaved and has been to Crufts. She's also recommended the training school we go to, Alpha Dogs in...

    Conflicting puppy raising philosophies

We like it too, but we've been told she shouldn't climb or jump on anything higher than her elbows. Plus she started to 'resource guard' the sofa, not the mention try to dig it up!

    Conflicting puppy raising philosophies

Thanks for the link to the AVSA link, @leashedforlife This discussion is all very interesting, and very germane to the problems we're having - our (21 week old) puppy's growling and 'conflict aggression' is getting worse. Dog expert friends and trainers have told us that same stuff, that we...

    Conflicting puppy raising philosophies

Yeah I get that. I don't think I was actually petting her while she was actually eating, but if the kong being in front of her on the floor counts as her eating, then I was.

    Conflicting puppy raising philosophies

Hi Judy, For the past week she's taken to aggressively resource guarding edible chews and the sofa or armchairs. She knows she's not allowed on the sofa and until a week ago would get down if told 'Off'. Sometimes she would get down if I came into the room, even without my saying anything. But...

    Conflicting puppy raising philosophies

Thank you, but she's too young for very much exercise yet. We don't want to bring on dysplasia or arthritis.

    Conflicting puppy raising philosophies

Thanks, Michelle. It's escalated since then, as Florrie has been 'trying to be the dominant one in the pack' according to a friend who's a very experienced owner and trainer. She's been growling and yesterday she bit me. We've booked a 1:2:1 session with one of our puppy class trainers. My...

    Conflicting puppy raising philosophies

Hi guys, I need some arbitration, please. My husband and I are at loggerheads about how to raise and train our puppy (a 19 week old labrador/springer spaniel/border collie mix). The training classes we've been going to, and a dog trainer friend all advise that we should not allow behaviours...

    Chasing house lead

Hmm that's an idea. It's easier to 'catch' the lead and stop her getting up to mischief with a 2.5m lead, though. I have found the lead really useful.

    Chasing house lead

I think someone on this forum advised it! I use it to pull her away from me when she's bitey and pull her away from things she's trying to steal or bite to pieces! It's been very useful in these instances.

    Chasing house lead

We started using a house lead with our puppy (now 14 weeks) a couple of weeks ago. Lately she spends a LOT of time chasing it around tables or chairs (as if it was her tail, but longer). Is this obsessive, and should I take it off? I've tried distracting her with other toys/games but this...

    Puppy separation anxiety?

Hello. Thanks for replying. She sleeps in our bedroom, either in her bed or under our bed. We put her there from the first night so we haven't tried making her sleep alone. I'm torn between thinking we should just not leave her while she's so young (12 weeks old) and worrying about advice to...

    Puppy separation anxiety?

Hi everyone. More advice needed please! We are really not making progress with teaching our puppy to be alone. We've had her for nearly four weeks and if we so much as go upstairs when she is downstairs (behind the stair gate) she howls and whines piteously. I've tried going when she's...
