    Meet Rusty

He's absolutely scrumptious - what a delightful character he sounds! Enjoy yourselves in his company.

    Guarding

We are very much in a different space with regard to our understanding of dogs. I don't need to be 'helped' with outdated advice on 'pack leadership', an approach that was debunked years ago, and one that most people who love their dogs recognised as nonsense from the word go. Your comments on...

Opinions on shampoo and skin care appreciated

A wipe with a damp cloth sounds like the way to go. Tbh, cooling coats cool the wrong part of the body - to cool, dogs need cold applied to their chest, belly, feet and gums. If left on too long, cooling coats can actually start to trap heat and make the problem worse. I've lived with dogs who...

Opinions on shampoo and skin care appreciated

I wouldn't think you would need to shampoo her if your aim is to cool her down. I offer my dogs a cool mat and a fan indoors, and, if it's really hot, a kiddies plastic paddling pool - dogs have the sense to use these and lie in the shade, so I don't see a need to intervene by dousing them in...

    scavanging and poo eating

He really does sound absolutely delightful, and that you have a good relationship with him. A couple of things stand out for me: one is the searching for treats as a game, and (as you suggest), from his point of view, that's no different from scavenging, which, confusingly, you are...

    scavanging and poo eating

First thing to take on board is that eating faeces, although monumentally revolting to us, is completely normal. Street dogs regularly eat poo, as do wild canids. Not particularly nutritious, but harmless. I agree a raw diet could be a game changer for him, and also feeding him more often...

    Guarding

Was going to say something very similar. What exactly is the reason for requiring 'eye contact'? None of this will make any sense to the dog, and it surely won't have any effect on.his feeling he needs to protect his resources if you take them away.

    Your favourite dog breed?

Ohhh I love a corgi I must admit, fabulous dogs, often just the right side of feisty (great name btw). Not as popular as they once were, but I really like them.

    RSPCA neutering policy

You would expect a vet to know that the only thing that is affected by a dog possessing functioning sex organs is his or her sexual behaviour, and nothing else. That's appalling practice. I have been very fortunate in that all the dogs who have shared my life have been entire, even though they...

    Meet Rusty

Oh my word Rusty is gorgeous! Wgat an absolute sweetie, good luck with him. So happy to hear he has found a lovely new home where he will be adored I'm sure.

    RSPCA neutering policy

That's very good to hear - there are certainly behavioural and physical problems that can stem from early neutering. I'd like to see that applied to all dogs, not just large ones. It has become a complete orthodoxy, yet it isn't right for every dog.

    Your favourite dog breed?

My favourite breed is rescue! I always go for personality over appearance or breed traits, so basically I will take anything, but beyond that, I love lurchers (my first dog), especially bull lurchers, also terriers of all types and anything crossed with a collie (especially a GSD or Labrador)...

Opinions on shampoo and skin care appreciated

Goodness! I have touched a nerve there it seems! I think it's a good idea if various voices are heard. It's fine to disagree, as we do, and leaving the decision to the individual. It won't harm a dog not to eat raw chicken, so I don't quite see why you are so exercised by the idea, but maybe...

Will my dog ever act “normally” around water!

It may be that the life you plan for her is not feasible - I think that's the first thing for you to come to terms with. The bigger concern is where this response to water goes next. It's a stereotypy (repetitive behaviour) that can start to extend to other areas, eg shadow chasing, tail...

    I. appreciate you have a lot of experience wirh your own pets but with respect, this is not the same as spending 15 years in vet nursing and looking after a very wide range of different dog breeds and types, and owners with very different levels of understanding. Your experience is anecdote...

The raw is likely to help any anal gland congestion, because by producing firmer poos, there will be greater pressure on the glands and so more likely to empty naturally. That said, do get a good brand of raw - I think Natural Instinct is one of the best, particularly the sensitive one. You need...

Oops, sorry for late reply. I have one dog on raw (Natural Instinct sensitive) and one who is on z/d (for sensitive digestion) for a couple of months while her allergies settle down, then she'll probably go onto grain free Forthglade, which is a good food, high quality. I haven't tried the...

I have used the Duoxo S3 Pyo Foam from my vet on my little collie cross as she has skin allergies, but I can't say it made much difference: it was changing her diet that did it for us. If she has a strong doggy smell that is very likely her diet, not her natural odour! I very rarely bathe...

    Our puppy isn't affectionate

I absolutely love this reply from JudyN, and RGC's reply too and the cocker who accepts attention on her own terms. I think there are no guarantees when you choose a dog, as they all have very different personalities, just as we do and indeed all animals. I have lived with dogs who could not get...

    Reactive Ridgeback

I just had a peek a Jimmy on your other thread, and had to add that he looks like the absolute epitome of my perfect dog - a leg at each corner, a dear, sweet face, a dog you can put your faith in entirely. I am so sorry for your loss.
