Timber once rolled on a dead duck. A duck that had been dead for many days. Or weeks, possibly.
Which is bad enough, but we were away in the camper van.
Smelly dog. Sealed tin can. Uh-huh.
This morning I received an unsolicited PM from a new member, who considers me a responsible type of person and would like to connect with me as a friend to share and discuss something very important with me.
I think not.
However, please be very wary of anyone making contact like this, there's...
Eaten ...
T ate a very, very dead thing on the beach. A dog's sense of smell is far more sensitive than ours, I could smell this from 20 metres. Upwind.
It was about the size of a litre of ice cream. The colour of a brain on one of the forensic science programmes. The texture looked like semi...
Sorry to lighten a serious subject but my dog isn't too possessive of things generally. Yes, he's snarfed down a slice of pizza he found and I'm happy enough to let him with something as relatively safe as that.
However. He says dead rabbits are for lightweights.
A couple of years ago, he...
I'm not sure what you'd like us to say - do you think he shouldn't be rewarded for getting off the bed?
Does it help to think of it as him being rewarded for doing as you ask?
The concern with resource guarding is that it can spread to other things, and as your dog is half cocker, there's a...
It's not the dog trying to be ”man of the house” or alpha or top dog - that theory has been thoroughly debunked and discredited, dogs simply don't think that way.
It may be to do with how your partner previously got him off the bed - when anything is being guarded (a tissue, a comfortable...
Thank you for explaining, that sounds a lot more reassuring.
Unfortunately dog training and behaviour is an unregulated industry and because we participate in forums like these, we often see the consequences of very poor practice. So we understandably get a little twitchy when someone says...
Sorry, I realise you weren't asking about this but that sounds like a contradiction in terms - with nervous dogs, the key to gaining confidence is slow and steady, a boot camp sounds like it could flood him, overwhelm him and make things worse.
Maybe it's just been badly named, but it sounds...
Sorry if I'm preaching to the choir here, you may be doing all this but I just wanted to cover all bases.
Are the products you have been using really good ones? Fleas have built resistance to some, so you really need top quality stuff. Like Indorex to treat the house, and there are various...
Definitely. As well as not being able to see the scary monsters in the corners, things sound different at night and anything that's different is something to be cautious of.
Generally Goldens are very friendly. There is good reason for them being one of the most popular breeds in the UK.
But genetics and paragenetics play a bigger part in temperament than most people realise. Did you meet the parents? Or, did anything traumatic happen while the dam was pregnant?
Fear certainly can be genetic and I think you need to prepare yourself for her never being a friendly dog.
However there are things you can do.
As you said, never correct her because fear is an emotion, not a behaviour she can control. She doesn't want to feel like this.
I think what may have...
There was another member who asked about this recently, so I'm going to link their thread as a first step.
As I said there, there are two issues that are related, but separate -.the pulling, and the excitement to see other dogs. I think you need to address both.
Here's the thread, but do come...
You could ask whether your vet would accept payment by instalments or see if you are able to get a low interest credit card.
Also, shop around. Some vets are cheaper than others.
