Rats are great pets, much better than hamsters! They areeasier to handle and you can really play with them. They aren't completely nocturnal so you do get to see them in the daytime. They love your company, are always pleased to see you and are very intelligent. They don't bite either!
May be hard work cleaning up for a week or two, but I would stop putting the pads down. Take him out every hour, and after a feed, sleep etc, and carry on even though he may not do anything. If he goes in the house, don't say anything, just clean it up. He can obviously hold it so at least that...

I don't have a problem with that - I do the same - in fact I can't even get to half the places she goes - and neither could anyone else! I agree - mine is a lurcher and she doesn't half cover some ground at speed, but if it's on or near a path or wherever anyone walks of course I clean it up
Thank you for that - it would be the way forward for me however I'm not sure I could manage the sheep's lung or pigs head. I may have to have a think about that. Would be useful to have a look at the sort of stuff I'd have to deal with.
