Nowhere near Norfolk but a lifetime lurcher aficionado. Too old for dogs now but many happy memories. I still go to lurcher shows, although with the recent demise of Countryman's Weekly, I don't know where they will be advertised now.
They are such lovely dogs, and you are such a caring owner to pre-empt any possible issues. Looking forward to hearing more about your puppy in due course. Maybe some photos, too.....
I agree. It was such a help with my independent practice that everyone knew me and therefore realised I had a lot of experience - and was also ready to learn more at every opportunity they gave me.
Also - last trip out before bed - do you put him out or take him out? It's always better to go out with them so you can make sure he has emptied out and not become distracted by outdoor goings-on, such as the fox activity JudyN has mentioned. Dogs don't know we put them out to empty themselves -...
I too was lucky enough to have a really good independent vet within reasonable distance, also one who had bred dogs himself and really knew the score. He has retired now and the practice carries on independently, but how long for is anybody's guess. The big corporate practices I suspect are as...
Ideally the judges need to come on-side, because the breeders create what the judges place. But IME most don't have a clue about conformational needs (including flat faces/tiny nostrils/drooling/misplaced teeth etc.) and go for exaggeration. It seems if a flat face is good, a flatter one is...
Also I suggest a patch of sawdust outside where you want him to go - and reasonably near the door because when puppies need to pee, it's NOW! Puppies are surface-specific, and if he has always used sawdust, it's a big hint to him. It won't be for ever, just a week or two until he gets used to...
The Retired Greyhound Trust would have a lot of adult greyhounds looking for a new home. Your son being the age he is, a puppy (even if you could get one, which isn't easy) might well be too much hassle for you both.
I don't watch and even if we did have TV I probably wouldn't, but I agree 100% with your words. Would be so easy to breed dogs with proper muzzles in all the flat-faced breeds.
I expect you are already keeping interesting things off the worktops, but a layer of tinfoil can be useful as well. Or else a babygate across the doorway.....
The noise and erratic movement of the hoover is often too much for a puppy to ignore - how about put him in a different room with a chew...
Doesn't matter how many pups we have brought up, the first few months/couple of years are hectic! It does get better, I promise. Meanwhile, you have us to laugh with, console you on the trickier days, and to ask about any particular issues you might want friendly support with. Those puppy days...
