Hi all so my 4 month long old Akita x Belgium Shepard won’t go to the toilet outside at all. She won’t go out on walks or when she’s out in the garden. As soon as I let her back in she will go on the puppy pad. I’m not sure if she was let out in the garden from the person I got her from but it’s like she wants to go but she’s unsure, I try to encourage her but she just won’t do it.

Has anyone else had this issue and if so what could I try?

Many thanks

We have an article here about puppy training, which may help: House training Do ask if anything isn't clear or you need any more detail though.

It sounds as if the puppy pads have trained her to do her toilet indoors. Can you offer the pads outside and see if she will still use them.

Hows it going? My puppy at 4 months didn't particularly like going for a wee outside on walks and would hold it in until he got back, which made for an unpleasant walk for him, then he'd have an accident in the house. For him it was about feeling secure I guess. Like someone else has said, I think she's got used to pads. It is a long process but just keep popping her out and go mad praising and fussing as and when she does one outside. I had to stand outside a looong time in the cold sometimes :). Every time he stood by the door , we praised him too. It will come eventually, but in all honesty Teddy was 5-6 months before I'd say he was 99% toilet trained, and has only been weeing outside on walks for the last 2 months or so, He's now 8 months. When it all came together it seemed to come together quickly, but the training is somewhat laborious I know! She'll get there!

I may be reaping but I don't see how puppy pads help it only confuses things as you will only have teach them another way again and as they are used inside well the puppy thinks it's OK to pee inside then.
This is what we did with a pup and a 6 month old, remembering they are babies and carnt hold their wee wee in as long as a adult dog. We let both of ours out for their wee/photo's every hour then last thing at night then you can increase it longer slowly, then they will get it, dogs learn very quickly but do need some patience we are the one's that teach them they don't come ready informed they learn from us.
I also say wee wee or and phoo's and quickly, or you can say something different if you like wait for them praise them with saying good girl or boy. I've never had any trouble.
