He has been prescribed Apoquel 16mg on a long term basis plus a special diet of Hills z/d it seems to help but is expensive , I was wondering if there was a cheaper alternative?

Are you buying the Apoquel from your vet, or getting a prescription from your vet which you use at an online pet pharmacy? The latter is a lot cheaper (even though you have to pay your vet for the prescription), and the vet may agree to give you a repeat prescription for a few months which will save more money.

This may be a thing you have already done, but have you tried isolating what is causing the problem, like trying an elimination diet? Do you need help with that?
