I mentioned elsewhere that on Saturday I met a new friend for a hike. She chose a spot nearer her home, it was my suggestion that she choose, because she is new to the area and I thought she might want to explore a place closer to her than to me. She's about a half hour drive from me, and it was another 20 minutes to the hike. I used to live over that way, had a few happy hikes in the park she chose, including a hike I took two young children on.
Way back in 2004, I took two little girls, then aged 5 and 8, on a hike in the same place I was at on Saturday. When we got back the five year old sat down and drew a picture of the three of us on our hike, with the water fall prominent, and gave it to me. I laminated it at the time, to protect it.
I dug it out to show my new friend, because I like doing 'show and tell'. When I got home that day I decided to e mail the girls' mother, I took a picture of the drawing front and back (to show the little girl's signature) and a picture of the falls I'd taken while with my friend, sent it to the mother with the memory, asking her to forward it to her daughter.
I got the nicest message back from the now young woman, not only thanking me for the picture and memory, but giving me all the credit for the fact that she and her older sister are both avid hikers now! (I took them on many other hikes too) I am absolutely thrilled to know my early days with them, taking them out into the woods, stuck and expanded.
