Am sure one of you will be able to answer my question. I would like to know what sort of speed (in km's) that a whippet can reach, and what sort of time they can cover a distance of 100mts?

I have also heard that a whippet can beat a greyhound off the mark, but will lose over the distance. True or False?

Thank you in advance

Karen

Tess does 150 yards in 16.5 secs.

Tess is faster at the start than Nana (who is half grey) but loses over distance and Nana again is faster than the greys for the first 50 meters or so and then loses it the further they go.

That can't be right... Our Whippets are doing 150 yards in about 10 seconds.

I expect Judy will have some exact times

When our Dandy was timed over 140 yds I did a quick sum and it worked out that his average speed was 29.6 mph.

Does that help?

Gavin :)

non pedigree whippets can do 150 in around 8.40 for the better racers but the top 32 lb show three has done it in 8.20 several times, also Biddy who weighs 18lb can do the 150 in around 8.50.

My 19lb pedigree Arctic scott won the straight champs at Abbots Ann in 1982 his winning time was 9.63, what times are they doing now?.

WCRCh Brown Eyed Girl recorded 9.40 in the final at the straight champs last year

Just had a look at the last Straight Champs programme . The times for 150 yards ranged from 9.33 to 9.89.

They were electronically timed. You have to remember that electronic times are not only more accurate than hand times but are also about a third of a second slower than hand times. This is because the timer is started when the button to open the traps is pressed rather than with hand times which are started when you can physically see the traps open from the finish line.

If the races above had been hand timed you would expect them to come out at about 9.03 and 9.59.

Its amazing though how much times vary from track to track and from week to week on the same track. They can even vary quite a bit between rounds on the same day at the same track!

24lb WCRCh Graceful Chime's was in the 9:40's then recorded a 9:37 in her final at the 3rd champ's last year ........

Whippet's are faster at exceleration .......Greyhounds will pick them up and over take, but in most cases over a proper long distance (a few field's :D ) the Whippet will end up beating the Greyhound as they have more stamina :)

Our Magic won his cons final in the fastest time of the day at the South Cots meet:

140yds in 9.03 secs making that 31.7 mph.

We wish he had run as fast in his other races but it`s only his third meet since he cleared, so he is still a novice. :luck:

Let`s hope he stays fit and behaves well on the track! :- "

Wow...............Well done Magic, that is a fabulous time  I just caught his race before we retired due to injury. He was lengths ahead of the others. Well done, you must be thrilled

We seem to be going through a bad patch. Not to worry, as long as the dogs are happy and fit we will carry on. It is only a hobby at the end of the day, and the welfare of our beloved pets comes first.
