As you get to know me you'll find out I like a good rant. Usually I have a reason so please bear with me ;)

My girlfriends friend is currently a full time mom and spends the majority of her time at home.

I've known her on and off for a few years and got the distinct impresstion she is a cat person (she had two).

About five weeks ago, she announces that she wants a dog the next day low and behold a dog turns up at her house.

Turns out she 'adopted' it via gumtree for £250!!

She had no history of the dog, no papers, nothing!

Anyway, he seems a lovely dog a jack russell and beagle cross. He just looks like a fat JR with floppy ears! lol

Today my girlfriend gets a text to say that they have taken him to a rescue as 'they cannot handle him anymore'.

I am fuming! I have no problem with people who have a dog and do the research and try everything to solve their problems and rescue is their last resort. But when they give up after weeks of having him is just wrong!

That poor dog is now sitting in a kennel in the cold and wet wondering what he's done to deserve being locked up!

It just makes me sad that we live in such a throw away society.

End of rant lol

How sickening - I can well understand your anger. Sadly it is something that happens on a daily basis. I don't know why people don't do their homework before taking on a dog (or any animal for that matter) and realise that it is a commitment for the life of that creature.

Poor little dog - I do hope he finds a home soon, although knowing just how full rescues are at the moment, that seems a faint hope.

Thats so incredibly sad - hopefully as he is still a puppy, someone will take him in, but as we all know, with a new bunch of issues so I hope the rescue finds him a good home soon.

I know my puppy was probably bred for the wrong reasons, especially as the women I bought her off also allowed her moggies to breed so she could sell them and of course as I run a Cat website and have for nearly 10 years and spotted the polydactyl paws and she announced it was so rare and she's never met anyone that knew what it was before. I googled her when I got home and found she sells the kittens as 'rare' because of their mum's feet - I was really worried.

I have been lucky so far, we have had her a year and we have had no issues apart from food possession, as much as she is an amazing puppy, I wouldn't go down this route again.

in cases like that i can see your point bout having your rant, saying that the brindle in my avater is a rescue i didnt know anythink, turned up had a look got a good vibe had him and 11 yrs on never a bad problem just pure fun,

I'm afraid it is an all to common occurence. Some people think dogs come prepackaged with no fleas/worms, toilet trained, and the usual. One of my rescue dogs had been returned 4 times before we had him. The excuses are dispicable too, who can judge a dog in 2 weeks, they don't settle for at least a year and some times more.

I knew a women once who adopted a kitten and freaked out that it had come with fleas - she was a germaphobe. It was only the calming and more sensible husband that got round her and they eventually had a great cat.

^^^ What s/he says!

Some people genuinely think that animals come out of the box as finished creatures and that we shouldn't need to do anything to help them either physically or socially. Those people are much better off with a stuffed animal.

The number of times I've home checked with Molly and the applicants have asked, ' can we have that one?' (pointing at Molly). At that point I do have to tell them how she was completely unsocialised, unable to walk properly on a lead, unable to be left at all without panicking, unable to be travel in the car without getting dreadfully anxious and barfing everywhere, unable to tolerate virtually any prepared food we tried for her and with 2 broken legs that made her limp really badly.

She's a polite, friendly and secure dog who is a pleasure to be around these days, but that's not because she came out of the box like that, it's down to training, exercise, socialising and then some more training.

If you aren't prepared to do all of that then you shouldn't get any animal, no matter the size.

Everybody who gets a dog or cat needs to be irrationally in love with them before they arrive, because your relationship needs to survive after they have chewed, barfed on or peed on something precious of yours. If it's an issue that you have marks on your carpet constantly then you really shouldn't be getting a dog or a cat.

Some people should only be allowed to keep a picture of a dog on their fireplace..........that's as close to a living creature as they deserve to get.

How can anyone just give up like that... :(

Fingers crossed the dog now finds a wonderful home and is better off away from that lady.

There are no words I could share in polite company. Both for the person 'selling' their dog on Gumtree and for the person who bought and disposed of the dog in a matter of a few weeks.

That makes me pretty angry too... did they at least speak to the original owners?

My oldest dog (3) Reno had been returned to his shelter three times before finally finding me and was on death row due to his aggression.

He wouldn't hurt a fly now, it took a good year to get him right but boy was it worth it!
