Hi Ive just joined. My name is Gina and my new baby is a GSD X Akita called Zak. Hes 11 weeks now so hes been with me for 3 weeks. When i can figure it out i will post pics of him.

I took him for his innoculations and asked if i could have him treated for worms and fleas the vet told me that they use an all in one topical multi wormer and de flea medication that is applied monthly.

I wondered if anyone had any opinions on this for and against compared to frontline and drontal. Also the vet was quite insistant i should have him castrated at 6 months but im not sure as ive read that its not good before they are 18mths.

I have started training classes to socialise him, any advice would be appreciated.

regards

Gina

should be a gorgeous looking dog when hes done :) quite an interesting combination really, as gsds are very intelligent, easily trained and responsive, whereas akitas can be incredibly stubborn and difficult to train. theres lots of akitas round my way, and none of the owners has had an easy time of it, but they all say its worth it, though they can be funny. i wonder if its because of the akita that your vet recommends castration? i personally wouldnt neuter at such a young age, dog or bitch, for the sake of mental maturity being affected, though its something to be considered later on if he has any dominance issues or wont leave the ladies alone, unless of course there is a medical reason for it, such as one or both testicals being undescended, as that can lead to cancer later on. if he has no problems in that area, and you arent going to breed from him, you can leave him entire. gets a bit tricky though, if you were to use him on a bitch, because then he'll know what THAT is all about, and will be very determined to get more. a friends dog was 9 when they used him as a stud, and that dog then became a nightmare, jumping out of first floor windows and escaping, getting into fights, running off and then turning up 30 miles away minus big chunks of both collar and ears, which was previously something he would never have done.

never used an all in one treatment myself. drops between the shoulder blades and bob martin tablets keep things in check, though i have to hide tablets in chunks of butter, cheese or ham to get them eaten

welcome to k9 :flowers:

Thankyou for your reply. The all in one wormer and de flea was placed as one dose on his skin between his shoulders and is to last a month. He still scrats and knats as though he has fleas, could he possibly have a reaction to our carpet or something?

I am not intending to breed and am thinking of having him castrated at around 18mths.

Hes a really good boy cheeky but well behaved.Only had a couple of accidents since he came here hes so intelligent you can almost see him thinking things over lol.

if there are no sign of fleas or their poo -sugar grain size dark bits in his coat on the skin then he could be sensitive to his food or if you have scotchguarded carpets that could be a culprit if he has a rash on his tummy. easier and cheaper to slowly (over a week or so) change his food to one which has no colourings or additives and see if this helps, what food is he on at the moment.

he sounds lovely, good luck with him
