Hello,

I have today taken my whippet to a racing club for the first time and must say i had a ball!

Alfie really enjoyed it and is thoroughly exhausted asleep next to me.

Unfortunately, i was told that he is too heavy at 16 kilos to race properly. The club have said they are more than happy to trial him and put him against other dogs, but i understand that non-pedigree whippet racing may be for us.

Can anyone help.

Thanks a lot.

 who said he is too heavy at 16 kilos

I have been told that as well altho it wasnt heavy we were told he was too tall

Hi Len, it's probably a pedigree whippet and that's why they've been recommended to look into non-ped racing.

LM can I ask wherabouts in the country are you? There's quite a number of peddys club racing at non-ped clubs now and quite a few are holding Open classes too for them. I have 3 peds all of which have been unable to race in KC Reg Pedigree Whippet Opens but that certainly hasn't stopped them racing competitvely. :D

Welcome to K9

Hello to you all and thanks for your comments.

I was advised that Alfie was a show bred dog, and that at 16 kilos he was a couple of pounds heavier than the racing limit. People were more than happy for me to carry on bringing him along and were most welcoming and helpful with their advice. It was suggested that to lose the 2lbs necessary he would lose his condition. I don't really see the point if he is not competitve and the people at Newmarket are happy for him come along and run at their regular meets

Compared to other Whippets there he was more of a "shire horse" than a "race hore" but i just love watching him run! I think that he is probably taller than the limit also.

I was just wondering if there is any group that would put him against similar dogs?

We are based in Bury St Edmunds.

Thanks for your help.
