Hi

as many of you know we have bought a beagle pup but I am rather surprised by his behaviour at the moment,he seems to be very very up front and rather pushy, completely different from any dog we have ever had.

He is quite bitey and if you tell him off it makes him worse. He has been very pushy with the adult dogs and barking at them a lot, he even plants himself firmly sideways on to Zoe. I always took that to be a dominant gesture but maybe I'm wrong.

Zoe got in his bed just now and he barked and growled at her so she got out!!!

One of the whippets bit him half an hour ago giving James a small puncture to his muzzle but ten minutes later he was back trying to menace again despite us being as vigilant as possible.

Need reassurance that I don't have a monster in the making, as I am now worrying a bit about this.

well I have been trying a couple of different things with him in the last half hour and have decided to take a slightly different approach than I normally would.

He may be little more than a very exuberant puppy who simply doesn't understand the rules...although he seems more like a naughty shark dressed as a beagle...so I am starting again and changing things a bit.

i think even though he is very young he needs a more structured day including specific play times etc and I think we gave him access to the whole downstairs too quickly and he thinks it's his arena.

We have protected the oldies as much as possible but when the pup got bitten, I was down the garden with Woody( frail whippet needed an escort :) )and my husband was in the loo, we both thought the other was watching little turnip head  I think maybe i'm expecting too much and I'm fussing too much trying to keep everyone happy and safe without much structure to what I'm doing and the pup just thinks it's a free for all :b .

it's so long since we had a naughty pup and i guess I'd forgotten just what little buggers they can be  feel free to ignore me I was having a panic, felt really bad that he'd upset my whippet enough to get a nasty bite and after four nights of no sleep due to howling big eared cute thing I just need a whisky and a lie down

I mean could this real be a demon in disguise....

What a sweetheart - he could never terrorise anyone! :D

It sounds like the equivalent of the terrible twos in human terms

Your assessment of the situation seems very appropriate - an ASBO and a curfew!!!!!

Good luck with your little terror :luck: ........... he looks absolutely angelic o:) (when he's asleep :teehee: )

Oh bless the o:) o:) o:) o:) o:) o:) little beast

Think you are going to have to keep him in his place, off the furnature, fed last, through doors last etc etc just to instill it in his little mind that he is not the boss!

He is soooooooooooooooo lovely

Oh so cute  but then so was our Hebe & she was the pup from Hell

She would also bite if she didn't get what she wanted. We didn't have any other dogs then so that wasn't a problem but she would have temper tantrums & bite my hand/arm/leg/ whichever was closest

A great trainer advised me to leave a lead trailing all the time & when she started to have a tantrum, to tie the lead to something solid like a table or the indoor crate & let her thrash it out by herself. this worked so well & I only had to do it a couple of times in the house & only once in the park. I did get some very odd looks from people though, me sitting at one end of a park bench in tears :'( with a very cute looking but horrible little pup at the other end savaging the bench.

After that incident she was a different dog, much nicer. I think because she got absolutely no reaction from the park bench it made her realise her little tantrums were not working & she stopped doing it.

Hope your little  becomes a little o:) soon

Julie

thanks guys, I had decided last night that he won't be allowed on the furniture and he won't be allowed upstairs at all.(Parker was allowed everywhere but he was not as pushy).

He has been ok this morning but Badger got in James's bed and James just kept trying to drag the bed across the room to get Badger out and despite being told off and moved four times,he still persisted until I moved him and redirected his focus yet again.........clearly a very stubborn beagle

Aw, good luck with the new regime ... he certainly is a handsome fellow
