Hi Everyone,

We have decided we would like to add a lurcher to our pack (currently 2 whippets, Busta and Chloe). We go along to all the Lurcherworld events and have seen all different kinds of lurchers, and I've been avidly scouring the adverts in Countryman's weekly and speaking to loads of people and getting all sorts of different advice. I'm now suffering from information overload!! Help!! :D What we would like is a loveable family pet who will also do a bit of rabbiting and be able to do well at the lure coursing when we go to the shows. Not too big, maybe just a few inches bigger than Busta (21"). Ideally we would like a broken or rough coated lurcher. Can any of you give us some advice? Is there an ideal type for what we want? I've been admiring the 'Beddy whippets rule' thread :) Would that be a good option? Is it right that we should avoid anything with Collie in it, they do produce beautiful looking merles? I'm so confused about what is right/wrong. Any advice gratefully received.

for what you want a beddy/whippet sounds a good cross........... why have you been told to stay away from collie x's as a well trained collie cross is a hard to beat companion and they are easy trained and will run all day long....

if you want to be compettative in lure racing you need a dog like a whippet/grey imo ...

I was told that collie crosses can be too intelligent for their own good. Good working dogs but not daft enough to chase a lure for round after round without learning the route and cutting corners! I've seen some 2nd cross bedlington cross greyhounds so that might fit the bill. If anyone knows of any beddy cross pups available please let me know.

whippet beddy crosses would be good at coursing under 23"and rabbiting, a grey beddy would be bigger faster version but you would be racing against some very fast racing machines in the over 23" from what i've seen, it depends on how competitive you are. hang around the racing spot the dog you like ask whats in it and try to find similar.

  vicky you so need one of our tiggers pups.BUT you will have to wait another couple of years for one :D :D ;)
