can anyone help with some quick advice? Hazel has damaged a toe nail and its pointing skywards and bleeding. We have never had this problem with our other breed. Sh's visiting the vet in 30 mins (10:30am GMT).

What usually happens to damaged toe nails? Do they have to be removed? Do nails grow again?

The vet will quickly take off the nail (w00t) , maybe wrap up the foot till you get home .

I would bath it in salt water when you get home and until the new nail grows ( which it usually does ) keep it clean.

Its not nice when they do it is it , :x but she should be fine :luck:

Yeouch,poor Hazel :huggles:

I had a similar thing happen to one of my whippies a few months ago,& the nail grew back, it's a bit thicker now,but doesn't cause any problem

i'd bathe it in salt water,& you can but neat lavender oil onto it,it won't sting her,is anti bacterial,& will stop her from licking at it too much!

Thanks for the replies. Much appreciated. The VET is removing the toe nail

tomorrow at 8:00. While she's there Hazel is having a 'bodkin' microchip whilst she is under the 'groggy' (can't spell anas........)

Welcome to k9

The VET asked if she had eaten - and she had - so he said it was not

advisable to go under the 'groggy'.

So it's 8:00am tomorrow.

Thanks for all the advice. :)) :))

Blimey, my vet just gently holds the nail with a bit of lint and quickly whips it off, its off anyway. They dont seem to mind and it soon drys up and regrows.

Mine too . I hope this isnt another ££££ job

Last time this happened to Zephyr - he had a bit of a swollen toe as well (though he wasn't even limping)- so the vet gave him a GA to Xray the joint and remove the nail - my bill was £200!!!!!!

Needless to say the swelling was down the following day and he was completely back to normal! :- "

But you don't have to agree to having it done!!!

Of course you dont , but this is when Vets `pray` on owners who think vets are `gods ` (w00t) We would tell the vet to stop being so daft and just pull the bloody thing off :- "

A couple of years ago Woody got bit and one young vet wanted to GA him , and have a good poke about his neck wound cos it `may` have gone through other muscles , She made me book him in for next day ( which I did) , but I insisted on seeing head Vet , whom I told i didnt think there was any need to make the wound any larger and should it not heal etc I would be back asap . She knew I knew my stuff and agreed with me that her colleague was maybe a little over cautious to say the least

That saved me ££££s and Woody a G A  Now most peps wouldnt dare go against their vets advice , but maybe they should ;)
