Hi everyone,

I'm sure there will be a complete mix of suggestions on this topic but I am in need of some advice on what to feed my two whippets. One is 3 years old and the other is 12 years old. They are currently on Science diet dry mix and meat but my younger boy Bailey has gone off this - sooooo I'm looking for a change for him plus he does seem to have a more sensitive stomach and system so help with this would be great. (I know I will need to change their diet over gently but want to get going on this asap!!!). Also I don't need a feed to put on weight :teehee:

All suggestions very welcome - thank you so much ;)

Try Arden Grange, Skinners working chicken and rice. Skinners will send you a sample so go on their web site. I have found their foods very good. I feed my lot on Greyhound Basic made by Burgess, they do well on it.

You'll have to shop around a bit I think.

:luck:

I know its a pain , but as they have such an age differnce they should be on diff , foods , the oldie should have a `senoir `diet , I like Pro Plan ,who also do one for sensitive stomachs too

Thats really helpful - as they will have two meals a day I will certainly make sure they are both on the correct feeds for their age - thank you  will have a nose on the web now ;)

Hi - Arden Grange salmon and potato is great for our 3 whippets - all different ages from 18 months to 14 old lady. Two have sensitive stomachs and we've found this is the one they like the best (they wouldn't eat Wafcol salmon and potato without marmite and honey on top! Very fiddly!!) The pup with the really gippy tummy does well on it, and eats his most mornings with no encouragement (needs a bit of a shove towards the bowl on lazy days) We've found that whippets don't need the senior, since ours still bounces about and needs the protein. She got too thin on the senior. We add glucosamine for her joints.

Havent heard of this feed before. My old boy still runs every day, does take it easier when he feels he needs to!!!!! Bailey is the fussy eater with the sensitive stomach. Really helpful to know that is suits all your whippets especially as they vary in age too - thank you. If my boys lost a little weight that would be a bonus :teehee:

If i need mine to add a bit of weight i put them on Autarky, really good stuff

Toddy who is 18 months and has a sensitive stomach does really well on James Wellbeloved white fish and rice. All my others get Aukarty (Costco cheapest supplier) . The oldies have been on Aukarty for the last 5 years and do very well on it.

Once my dogs reach the age of 9, I start them on Glucosaminie and Condrition daily to help keep their joints supple and in good condition. Foxy started it age 11 which was too late as her joints and bones had already started failing by that point. Misty now 11 bounces around like a 6 year old.

Hi,

Mine all have Royal Canin Adult, and they all thrive on it.

We used to have skin problems with Spike, but since he has been on this food,

all his problems cleared up.Finn and Cracker are both racing dogs,

and again,do brilliantly on this food. They also do Royal Canin sensible, which

is highly appealing for fussy eaters

Hi there

There are some quality complete foods were you do not need to have different foods for different ages of dogs. Being in that situation myself and also a owner of different breeds of dog, of different sizes, I wanted something that would suit them all. I did use Burns for quite some time but changed from this and now have them all on Fish4Dogs. Having used over three 15kg sacks of the stuff I can say that I have been very impressed by both the quality of the food and also the quality and speed of service when buying from them direct.

My dogs range in age from 10.5 years to 1.75 years and it suits them all.

The taste of Fish in their feed is what they love. Have ordered some samples so thank you so much. I'd rather feed the boys the same feed as its easier and they like to switch bowls (why I don't know, sure they think the other bowl has something better in it lol!!!!) however being their ages are sooooooooo apart I'm aware Rocky now 12 yrs will need a little something extra to keep his joints and body a helping hand  They loved James Wellbeloved Fish and Rice which I bought yesterday (I think they thought it was a treat lol!) and awaiting samples before deciding and buying a sack full ;)

thank you for help and advice, I am looking into it all, think I will be a pro on feeds after this :teehee: only kidding!!! :teehee:

Any well sourced protein feed. Examples being James Wellbeloved, Royal Canin, Wainwrights, Arden Grange etc. You get what you pay for and these feeds and other quality protein feeds will state a minimum amount of meat content and what that meat is e.g. Lamb.

Well sourced protein feeds enable the dog to absorb protein easier without putting demands on their digestive system. Whilst some feeds brag of high protein levels, if this is poorly sourced e.g. hooves, nails etc, the dog's body has to work harder to absorb the protein within them. The tell tale clues being poor coat condition and immune related skin conditions.

Additionally grain in feeds can trigger allergic response e.g. wheat and corn. Rice and barley are generally used in sensitive feeds or other sources of carbohydrates are used for example potatoes. Senior feeds tend to have more grain added as a preventative to constipation along with joint supplements but they also need a high quality protein as absorption can be impaired in the senior dog. For these reasons, specific feeds appropiate to the dog are best used.

Not a single mention of flesh,i find this odd
The OP stated they feed their dog with a kibble plus meat. So long as this isn't pork (which can cause absorption issues) then it makes sense for people to respond with suggestions about changing the kibble only.

Is there a reason that you changed from the Burns, only asking as two of mine are on it. The puppy came to us having been weaned onto Fish4dogs but he now won't touch it - he's on Burns puppy.

The dogs were happy on Burns but after reading a few articles thought that Beau might benefit from being on the sardine food that they offer. As I didn't want to use two different foods I moved the three of them over. Beau is certainly looking much better on it.
