Hi,

a long one- sorry. :b .I want some advice on expanding our pack please. At the moment we have Tess (18mths) and Nana (21mths, rescue) both unregistered whippets.

First question- what are the advantages/disadvantages of more whippets, my problem is that I can't seem to get enough of them, and OH who is more sensible says two is enough for the moment.

Second question- I am really keen to have a registered whippet as it will expand the things we can do, is there any way the descendants of unregistered whippies can ever become registered in the future?

Third question- What is the best age to breed from a bitch?

Fourth question- We, especially OH, are very keen to breed from Tess as we reckon she is really special  . She had an early injury which means that one of her hips apparently dislocates easily at the moment (no one has ever seen it out but she goes very lame for a day or so for no reason, apparently the x-ray shows no damage, but the ball was ina slightly strange place within the socket, impllying that it has dislocated..........? all very confusing) I was very worried that it was HD or something that I did wrong when she was little, but hte vet reckons as she was by far the smallest of the littler -absolutely tiny- she was probably squashed in the womb or something  .

The vet reckons that with lots of exercise this shouldn't happen any more after about six months so puppies shouldn't be a problem, and certainly she is hardly ever sore now even a few months later, but I still worry- does anyone have any experience of similar problems?

sorry about all of that but I need help making my mind up-

Three options as far as I can see

1- don't breed from Tess, but, if possible, get one of her registered (Lynperry) half sisters

2- breed from Tess and get a registered whippet

3- breed from Tess and be able to register her descendants at some point in the future

THank you so much for bothering to read all of that if you haven't fallen asleep yet (I'm sure I would have) -_- -_- -_- -_- -_-

If Tess is unregistered and her parents are unregistered, the likelihood of ever getting her or her progeny registered is zilch!

Personally, knowing her medical history, I would not risk breeding from her as you do not know for sure if the problem is hereditary and if anything happened to either her or her puppies, you would never forgive yourself.

I think the safest option would be to buy in a registered bitch of sound, healthy stock and breed from her when she is old enough (2 - 3 years old)

I know what you mean, I couldn't bear to hurt her, she's a wonderful wonderful girl   . You've confirmed what i thought deep down anyway, I just thought a second opion would help. Thank you

She just seems so motherly, in a way it seems mean not to let her have puppies and they's be so cute ( but then aren't all puppies), but she'll probably love having a puppy around anyway.

I think I'll certainly leave thinking about it again till she's much older and has been completely right for a long time, then I'll go to a vet again.

Thanks again for your advice

Olivia
