When i walked down to back of my garden yesterday I found a pumpkin (w00t) high up in my rambling rose!!! The stalks were all withered and dried, does that mean that the pumpkin is ready to eat? I remember vaguely the last time I grew some pumpkins about decade ago, i cut some before they were ripe. But that time I had about 60 of them so it did not matter - in the end I kept sneaking around our street at night leaving pumpkins on my neighbors' doorsteps :)

But i do not want to cut this one unless I can be sure it is ready. Any ideas?

If the stalk is dry and withered then yes, it should be ready to eat.

There are some pumpkin varieties (though technically they are winter squashes) that stay a blue-green colour, but have deep orange flesh inside. I wouldn't leave it too long, I always eek mine out through the winter, then find the ones I've been saving suddenly rot very quickly and I wish I'd used them up earlier.

What are you going to make with it?

Thanks for the advice, well it should be ripe then. I am just bit puzzled by the colour. It sprouted from seed out of my compost, but I never buy pumpkins like these. i like the little ones called here Kent or Jap, they are bright orange, sweet and you do not need an axe to carve them.

Looks like I am going to be living on pumpkin for a while, probably starting with pumpkin soup :) , hmmmmmmmm........curried pumpkin sounds great too. There is enough to do several different dishes.
 
I thought Pumpkin was the name of your dog (w00t)

A friend of mine made pumpkin wine once...she got recipe off of the net. :)
 
I've got a lovely recipe somewhere for pumpkin pie, which, if you haven't had it before, is really a sweet tart. Delicious - uses condensed milk I think.

And I think my pumpkin soup is the best in the world (naturally :lol: )

Boil up the pumpkin, with some minced garlic (out of a bottle) or crushed fresh (whichever you prefer) and some diced onion. When it is soft, mash it.

Let it cool for a little while and add some thickened cream - as much or as little as you want - depending on how much pumpkin you cooked. Add some pepper to taste and some "Season-All". Then with your "bamix" (or any electric whizzer) whizz it up till it is thick and smooth. (We don't like our pumpkin soup runny - we like it thick - about the consistency of a thick-shake) :p

I'm sure I've seen that variety of pumpkin before but I can't for the life of me think what it's called.

Could it be Queensland Blue? Anyway , I cut it today, had some curried for dinner.

Thanks for the soup recipe, will make it tomorrow. :) The pie sounds nice too, but i do not eat much of sweet things.

Thanks Elizabeth, but I cannot find here anything resembling mine. Maybe this one is some cross? It has almost no ridges, is orange inside and quite easily cut. It really is very similar to the Japanese (or Kent) pumpkin I buy normally, but not as sweet.
 
ooo that looks scrummy ...iv never tasted pumpkin before does it taste savoury or sweet :D

The taste does vary between varieties, the Japanese one has a sweetness of a sweet carrot. Others have no sweet taste at all.

I make a very nice fruitcake with pumpkin for Christmas. The pumpkin give it very nice gold colour :)
