hello

our 2yr old dog (a chiwawa cross) recently went blind after what our vet says was meningitis.

she's been on steroids for a few weeks and has got very small bit of her sight back and been absolutely fine but was warned she will eat more, she was already overweight.

we've just come back from vets and been prescribed "atopica" along with more of the same steroids.

my wife always reads up on side affects and discovered these drugs are usually used for skin disorders and have some not so nice side affects.

has our vet prescribed them because they also have other uses as there's nothing wrong with her skin

thanks, michael

So sorry to hear about your little dog's problems. Dogs do manage very well when they lose their sight.

Steroids have many uses. Atopica is just one of them. They also fight inflammation which is, I suspect, what your vet is aiming at.

You can help your little dog navigate around the house and garden by putting certain scents on things like steps and doorways. Lavender on steps, for instance, and another on doorways. You might like to teach a word like "Whoops" or "Careful" when she is about to collide with something. This might help her to slow down her approach to objects in her path.

I'm sorry to hear about your little girls sight loss, I hope she learns to cope (I'm sure she will ! ) gypsymum2 always has good advice.

As far as the vet saying she will eat more!! then this is your responsibility not to give her more, you can control her weight by giving her less.

Remember that treats count as food intake too.

thanks for your replies

as i said it appears she does have some sort of vision back albeit very very slight, it was zero 4 weeks ago, she can react to movements and around the house & garden you'd never know any difference, whether it'll improve further who knows.

and thanks for explaining the other tablets, we have reduced her food intake
