Hi

I am the proud owner of a lurcher pup who is 8 weeks old on Saturday. He seems to have settled in well but I`ve not had a dog for a 16 years so am a bit rusty, especially as he is so young. I expected him to bite a bit but he seems to be nipping and biting us quite a lot and we don't know the best way to deal with him. Any advice please?

Hi. I always think the best thing to do is to yelp loudly and stop all play. He should get the message that biting is not allowed.

with our boy, when he starts nipping us, we tap him on the nose and say NO! if he does it again, say no and put a growly sound into it (his mum growls to get him to leave her alone and it works). that usually makes him think before trying again, and a look from us makes it stay a thought. daft pup that he is, within a couple of hours he forgets and we have to repeat the process. BUT, the gaps are getting longer :D

that worked with amber, but dante finds it hysterical when we tried that. the little git would jump on us even more, tail going like windscreen wipers

hope it works out alright

I agree with lalena, growl at him and say NO!! very firmly :D

The growling has always worked for us (w00t) as lalena said it's how his Mum would chastise him  Warning though you will feel incredibly stupid especially if you have visitors who maybe are'nt that doggie (w00t)

Yup good advice there WAFFARTER  Pups learn through play, its a good start to educate them to whats acceptable in this gentle way.

Out of noseyness what is the cross? What you called him? Any photos??????????? :D We like photos on here...specially of cute pups

The blue/grey pup is so cute. Here's another one of my cutie, Scrumpy, aged just 5months.

Thanks for all your advice. We semed to have turned a corner now. He has loads of toys to chew on that we distract him with every time he tries to bite. The firm voice is working a treat though it sounds strange coming from my little voice. He hates it if I push him awayafter I've told him off and he comes govelling back with big puppy dog eyes. He's called Sam and he is 9 weeks old now. We drove to Shropshire from Chesterfield 3 weeks ago just to have a look and possibly pick one puppy from a litter of 10 and we ended up bringing him home the same day in a cardboard box. He seems to be settling in well. Tried to attach a pic but keep getting an error message. His mum is a fawn rough haired deerhound cross with a greyhound, the dad is a smooth fawn greyhound. Not sure how big he will be but he's grown 2 inches in 3 weeks!

Sounds like he might get to be quite big! :)

My rescue gh used to nip a lot, we did the growling thing and it has worked quite well. When he was in a foster home in Ireland his foster mum encouraged him to hold her hand (he was 3 months old at the time), now he is 1 year old he is a lot bigger and stronger so hand holding became nipping. He still holds hands with me though if we go round the garden etc and in the house he likes to hold on to your sleeve and trousers, but he doesn't nip anymore. The hand holding is a security thing I think. He knows the difference between hand holding and nipping and that nipping is not allowed.

Oh that is good news WAFFARTRE, sounds like you are really delighted with him

Think you get an error message if the photo is too big? You can look on the help thread on the main board, use one of these photobucket doofreys or I just downsize them on the PC where they are stored before browsing and attaching them-'cos thats what my son told me to do  Has his uses!
