We have recently taken in my mother in laws Bichon Frise as she has gone into long term care. The age of her dog (Rocky!) is unknown as he was a rescue dog when we first got him around 10 years ago - suspect he is around 12 and has always been a very nervous dog around people. We have a 2 year old Weimararner (Button) who he follows everywhere even though with his old bones he struggles to keep up. Initially we had a few accidents around the home which seemed understandable - he is probably very confused at being taken from his home and loving owner. During the day we have very few problems - he goes out when Button goes out however doesnt appear to have control overnight which might be due to stress or incontinence due to his age. On rare occasions when they are apart if he is left unsupervised he will urinate or defacate indoors - even if he has access to outside. Is this attention seeking? We tried him in a puppy crate but he barks non stop. To begin with Button was very accommodating but recently seems less tolerant and spends most of her time trying to get away from him. She hasnt shown any sign of aggression but overnight has started crying and scratching at the kitchen door for attention which is out of character. She isnt doing this to go outside - she bolts upstairs where he has difficulty following. I dont want this drama to be a regular evening event. If i try them in separate rooms overnight Rocky will bark, if i leave him in the crate he barks/whimpers, if we leave them together Button is looking for attention! any advice?

I wonder if it is stress rather than attention seeking?

Poor Rocky and poor Button for being invaded with an old codger!

All you can do is make the best of the situation, perhaps take button for some walks on her own so she feels she is getting some attention from you and perhaps Rocky needs to be left in the crate - barking or not.

Have he had a vet MOT to make sure everything is all okay and working?

BTW - welcome to Dogforum!

Bichons are very human focused dogs, they love and adore their true owner, he is probably mourning the loss of his home amnd all he took for granted as being normal. If you are concerned over his toilet issues have your vet give him the once over to rule out any medical reasons for his inability to perform outside all the time.

Time is the best thing you can give him, but be firm and praise the positives he has had a huge upheaval bless him.
